Mobile broadband recommendations

Hi all,

I'll be in Prague and Italy (Venice/Cinque Terre/Florence/Rome) with my SO around May this year, and would like to have internet availability (especially for google maps usage). I was thinking to buy a portable mobile router - one of those where you buy the SIM card in whatever country you happen to be in, and pop it into the router. Has anyone ever used a similar device, and if yes, which would you recommend? I've been looking at the Huawei devices, particularly the E5776 (longer battery life).

Also, my SO will be remaining in Italy (she's a freelancer, I have the 9-5 job back home) for some teaching at the end of our trip, so she would probably hang on to the device for emergency use/email/maps, etc). Anyone know of roaming SIM cards that would work across the European borders? Or would a SIM card have to be purchased in each country she/we visit?

Thanks,
NJ
