Mink Oil for waterprofing shoes

Has anyone used Mink Oil for waterprofing leather shoes?

I use in for hiking boots and it works great. Don't see why it wouldn't work on shoes; although it might darken them a bit.

I don't know if you can get it in the U.S., but I use Dubbin on leather boots and shoes. It's a waxy type product available in shoe stores here....you rub it on well, especially along the seams, then buff it off. It'll give them a good shine, too.

But, Norm, if I remember correctly, Dubbin smells AWFUL !

I have used mink oil on leather shoes that I wanted to water proof. It works fine (except it isn't permanent, you need to reapply about once or twice a year). It will definitely darken your shoes, they'll look about the same as they do if your shoes are soaked. Be sure to get plenty on any seems that might leak. I spread a bunch on then give it awhile to soak in before wiping off any excess.

Kiwi offers sprays now that waterproof shoes. The one that works well has the word "all" in the label. I've used that to waterproof my wife and daughter's Ugg boots without making the suede look bad. I use it when they are new and spray them about three times (spray - allow to dry, spray - allow to dry, spray - allow to dry) before the first wear. It seems to work well and keeps their boots looking nice a lot longer.

Nope....smells sorta like shoe polish, altho not as strong....more a waxy scent until its worked in and polished.
