Microfiber or Chamois?? hmm...

Which fabric works better for drying hand washed clothes: microfiber or chamois towels?? What about those ShamWow towels I always see on TV? Thanks!!

We use Rick Steves' extra large travel towels for soaking up extra water out of certain clothes.

However, most of our travel shirts and shorts we ring out and shake because otherwise they will wrinkle. That is the key to no-winkle clothes. They must have enough water in them to drip for a while....then shake them again.

We also use 2 of Rick Steves' travel clothes lines.

I worked my way up to a chamois after trying various travel towels including a couple synthetic chamois. The biggest advantage I see in a chamois is how dry it wrings after use. Every towel I tried (including the synthetic chamois) worked well for the first item but were too damp to work as well on the next. The chamois did the best job of getting water out of my handwashed clothes then, after wringing, doing an equally good job on all my clothes and being fully dry (after hanging) to be packed.

I haven't tried the latest synthetics like Shamwow, they may be better than the ones I tried a few years ago.

I second the Rick Steves towels. I have ones from RS and EAgle Creek and find the RS ones work better. They soak up a lot of water and dry quickly.

I use the bag the towel comes in to hold not only the towel but all my laundry stuff--sink stopper, clothesline, inflatable hangers, detergent. It's easy when everything is in one place.

My best choice is neither. After taking a shower in the evening, my towel is damp and not soaking wet. So I wash clothes in the sink, then lay them on the towel, roll it up, and wring it. A single layer works best, even if I have to do the clothes in batches. The towel takes out most of the water, then hanging them on a travel line does the rest by morning. This is for synthetic clothes, not cotton...

I use the MSR PackTowl Ultralite. Very large - super lightweight - works great.

My wife and I used ShamWow on our recent trip and it worked fine.
