I'm not a real fan of backpacks or day packs for carrying around things while sightseeing, as a carry-on, etc.
Has anyone taken a messenger bag instead? Do you see people with messenger bags in your travels to Europe rather than traditional backpacks?
I usually use my messenger bag as my "personal item" on the plane and then use it as my daybag while touring. Mine is not a very large one, so it works fine. A largish one might be uncomfortable to tote around, perhaps, in comparison with a similar sized backpack.
Messenger bags are extremely popular, with men and with women. They are easier on the back I think than a backpack if you wear it across your chest as opposed to just on one shoulder. Safer too. I hate getting bumped by backpacks, especially in stores, restaurants and the subway. It is like people put them on and then forget they have this hump on their back that bumps people and things every time they turn.
I've always used a messenger bag...for the past 6 years. I use a small-ish one. I've never been pickpocketed. Plus I don't worry about bumping people and things with a back pack.

As posted already, messenger bags are very popular, and guys in Europe use them all the time.
My "purse"is basically messenger bag style and I love it,, big enough for the few things I need to carry, but not as bulky as a backpack.
I had been eyeing the following messenger bag at LL Bean:
I just picked one up in the medium and large so I can test out which size I like better, and will return the other one.

I purchased this cross between a messenger bag and backpack for an upcoming trip to Europe. I used a messenger bag on a previous trip and it hurt my shoulder. I'm hoping this will be a little friendlier on my back and shoulders, but I like that I can swing it around front on trains, etc. It's not too large, has lots of interior pockets, and a pocket on the back that would be against my body.
