For insurance, I am wondering how much to indicate for the trip cost because the trip is paid by award points and reserve now pay lodging that will be paid with cards with travel insurance. This is for a trip to England and Wales.
Example for 2 people:
-Airfare is all on points except for fees that come to $700 total (paid for with Chase Saphire Preferred -CSP)
-7 days in London covered by award points with day before cancelation policies. The reservation is broken up into about 4 separate bookings because 3 of the nights are free Hyatt award nights. So each separate booking will have their own cancellation window
-next is 3 Airbnb bookings and 2 hotels, also Reserve No Pay Later.
If I have to cancel the trip without insurance:
If something comes up, the airfare fees will be covered by CSP and the points returned to my account (minus the penalty I would pay to change the reservations charged by Virgin and BRiitish Airways)
The Hyatt hotel reservations could be canceled in time except for maybe the very first night if I had to cancel the entire trip the day before. That first night is it's own stand alone reservation.
All of the Airbnb reservations would be cancelable in time if we don't fly at all. I also have Amex Platinum that is holding these reservations.
The railcards and train fares would probably be covered by the credit card's insurance policies once I get those.
So that pretty much leaves train railcard purchases, prepaid tours, and actual train fares (I will have 6 confirmed train fares I plan to purchase in advance) that I would have to take up with the credit card companies. In the end, I haven't paid much up front for the actual trip with lots of ways to back out in an emergency. So I think I primarily want medical insurance and medical evacuation coverage.
Although my credit card will cover the airfare fees, there might be some reasons to cancel that would come up that they won't cover that insurance would cover. Given all the above, should I just take out a medical policy like with GeoBlue? I have health insurance that will cover me internationally but I am liable for 20% after deductable. Or would I get more unforseen benefits getting a policy for a $1000 trip on Squaremouth that has similar medical coverage to a GeoBlue plan but with some extra perks added in (since GeoBlue is only medical).
This sounds like a lot but the difference in policies for 2 people is roughtly $80 - $200 depending if I cover $1,00 vs say $5000. What am I not thinking of? (as I over think this!)
What might I not be thinking about or understanding if I just put $700 (airfare fees) only for the cost of my trip and select trip paid in full (no more payments) when running an insurance quote?
