My husband and I will be traveling in Europe from the US this spring for 4 weeks. We are both in our mid 70's and would like to find a company that would cover getting us back to the states if something would happen while we are traveling. And of course we would like a plan that would cover a hospital stay, etc. The companies that get good reviews when I do a Google search are GeoBlue, IMG, and Allianz. Has anyone else used these companies or have other recommendations?
For the medical evacuation part, my wife and I have Medjet policies. They are pretty popular here for that. For the medical care part, we have very good medicare supplements that cover a lot. Depends on just what Medicare policy and supplement one has.
A typical medical policy may or may not have evacuation coverage, and if it does, it might not be good enough. Be sure to read all the fine print about medical evacuation coverage.
There are a lot of posts on the forum about insurance. Do a search and filter for the past 6 months or 1 year. (Warning, this website is acting wonky today. You might want to try your search after the weekend.)
You'll find success stories and disappointments. It's all in the details of the policy. And policies vary by state.
Use a site like Insure My Trip. You can easily compare policies. And you can call or chat with them with questions.
I've purchased policies with both IMG and C & F depending on my needs. However, I have never made a claim.
I've been buying Allianz coverage for years and finally had to use it in Switzerland in 2024, when my husband made a flying swan dive in a Lucern cathedral two hours after we arrived. We were satisfied with the coverage for the resulting quadriceps tendon repair surgery, five-day hospital stay, and flight home, although it took a fair amount of negotiations to actually get us on a plane home. I did not expect our Humana PPO medicare supplement policy to cover anything, but surprisingly, it did pay for most of the emergency care part. One thing you should be prepared for is that you pay for everything up front and then file to be reimbursed.
In hindsight, I would say that Allianz was satisfactory. I'm still buying it, medical only, no trip interruption, because it's very fairly priced. I have added an annual Medjet policy for myself, because I make about four trips a year and the cost is low when divided by four.
Thanks for the suggestions everyone!
