Very little American insurance (if any) translates to travelling in Rome. Limited travel costs runs a wide price range for similar coverage while traveling.Lots of insurance names on Expedia.Com and InsureMytrip.com. I am interested in folks who had to file claims and was it complicated and were they covered. Reading the policy requires an insurance attorney at my elbow.I will just be walking the streets of Rome and not skiing the alps. I will contact my own insurance company in States to see what (if anything) I have plus has been suggested I contact Visa credit card for same reason.
I had to seek medical attention while in Germany. I paid out of pocket and after I got home I called the travel insurance company. I filed a claim, faxed them my receipts and was fully and promptly reimbursed.
Knock on wood I've never had to file a claim. Just an FYI... even if your insurance at home covers medical expenses abroad, it may not also cover evacuation, repatriation charges. Should you suffer a severe leg or hip break which required special transport to get you home to recuperate those charges can range from $50,000 to $100,000.

thanks for the good information. I telephone my US medical company. I asked about coverage while in Rome. A key word I picked up on when I asked was "we will consider the claim" but this requires my getting hospital/dr bills, translate into English and cost from EUrs to dollars and no guarantee it will be covered. I am flying Aer Lingus so I got insurance from their webside. Reasonable cost and good coverage.
We have used American Express Travel Insurance for eight long trips (4 to 6 weeks each). We have made two claims, after returning from Australia, six years ago. We were promptly reimbursed. We are using them again to go to Australia and New Zealand in October.
