Meals on Lufthansa

I'm looking over my Air Confirmation and it is stating that no meal is provided. Do they sell food on board? Am I to pack our food for a 9 hour flight?

No meal on the long-haul flight from SFO to europe? Or are they talking about a shorter flight? That seems strange because the website says, under Special Meals, that "Please note that special meals are usually offered in Economy Class on flights of more than 185 minutes duration and in Business Class on flights of more than 75 minutes duration." So if they offer Special Meals in Economy, they must offer meals, it seems to me. I can't find anything about charging for meals (Like it says on the Iceland Air website). I would call and ask-say you want to order some vegetarian meals or something.

I would contact Lufthansa to be certain as rules vary with every route. For me I would take some things with me as airline food is not noted for being very good, or very plentiful - they tend to run out. You can take food through security - no problem. I've taken breakfast burritos, sandwiches, ribs, lots of things. Or you can purchase after security too. I will say United has this really nice "tapas" box they sell - I always ask for them to set one aside for me as soon as I board.

Our first leg is to O'Hare. I will feed the kids lunch there during our 4 hour layover. Then we have a 5:35pm - 8:35am flight to Germany. It states no meals. the same with our return flight. 1:00pm - 3:05pm Germany to O'Hare. No meals. I haven't had an International flight in years so I didn't know how they run things now.

I have taken a lot of international flights in recent years and never encountered one that didn't serve meals.

Well there was a thread on here not too long ago by a lady who took Icelandic Air( I think thats it) and they do not serve free meals on trans alantic flights either, period.. she was horrified. Personally I think they are doing you a favor, bring your own food, I find airline food to be offensive at best. I always bring food, and especially when I had kids with me.. you can pack some non perishables ( granola bars, and cup of soups or cup of noodles, they can give you hot water) . I also think you should bring meals so kids can go to sleep after boarding instead of waiting for the yucky dinner.. The worst meal on planes is breakfast if you ask me, muffins so saturated in artifical flavors and colours and preservatives, they likely have no more nutrional value then giving your child a twinkie! Its the hardest meal to bring too, since you can't bring anything "liquidy" so yogurt is out, but you can bring instant oatmeal pacakages and a styrofoam cup and ask for water and make them oatmeal( hey, I know instant oatmeal isn't that great either but you do the best you can)

Did you book that with Orbitz or Expedia or somebody like that? Is it a United plane or a Lufthansa plane? It seems very odd that the Lufthansa website would not say anything about needing to purchase meals in economy. People traveling with kids (like you) need to know that in advance. Not everyone reads their ticket confirmation that closely. Seems like on a place taking off at 5:35 pm, going overnight, there should be meals provided! (Or obvious notice given on the website).

In what section of the confirmation does it appear? Sometimes you will see "no meals" on an airline ticket in the section where they indicate if you have ordered a special meal. However, they will usually have something like "Dinner, Snack" in another part of the reservation.

I booked through United over the phone. The confirmations came in the mail. I will call. Thanks!

Lufthansa fed us last year between Seattle and Frankfurt, and Frankfurt and Denver. Not saying it was anything great, but it was food, and free. I'd hate to think they're starving their customers. As Pat mentioned, Icelandair charges for meals, I thought alone among the transatlantic carriers. It also charges as lot less for the ticket, and gives you fair warning. After you call Lufthansa, please let us know what you find out. I could believe they're starting to sell meals instead of giving them away (tacky though that is for such a long flight) but I really can't believe they won't have food even for sale. Maybe you'll have to raid the flight crew's stash!

Stay-ce, I've flown Lufthansa on a number of occasions on Star Alliance code share flights, and have always been served a meal. Similar to Air Canada long haul flights, they serve a hot meal a few hours after take-off and offer two choices (ie: beef or chicken). A few hours before landing, they serve a "continental breakfast" which usually consists of some type of pastry, yogurt, juice or similar. Unless something has changed in the last year or so, I suspect that you'll be served a meal. The Luftansa website states "We offer you menus that suit your departure time and destination. The meals are rounded off by a wide selektion of complimentary drinks." That's rather "non specific" but would seem to indicate that meals are served. I've also recently booked flights and noticed that my flight from Paris to Toronto only has "Meals - Snack" listed. The Travel Agent is checking that for me, as it doesn't seem correct. I've always had good service with Lufthansa, so hopefully that will be your experience also. Happy travels!

Unlike Iceland Air, where it is explicitly stated numerous time that all food onboard is for purchase, I've never been on a long haul LH flight without a meal and believe that your confirmation (printed by United?) is wrong. It may be that intra-european flights are food for purchase, but the TALT flight will have two meals most likely. I'd put a lot of money on it.

Lufthansa serves meals - also in Economy on all long haul flights. Your message must be an error the confirmation.

I've flown Lufthansa and always had meal service (though I try not to eat much on the flight over, because I focus on sleeping). It may just be your connecting flight doesn't serve a meal - that's become pretty common on domestic flights, even cross country. That said, times are tight for airlines. It may be true or just a mistake. Best to check with Lufthansa. If it is true, pack some dry snacks that don't need refrigeration (like nuts or granola bars) then augment with sandwiches you can buy before you board your flight.

We always get a meal with Lufthansa on international flights. Just flew last August and were fed on the trans atlantic leg and on the inter Europe leg as well.

The last couple of transatlantic flights I have taken (on American and United) the ticket clearly said no meal provided. I don't know why the tickets said that because we had the usual dinner and light breakfast and I did not need to break out the credit card.

Whether directly from SFO or IAD, on UNITED to LHR we've always been served a full meal an hour or so after takeoff. They also offer snacks during the flight (mostly sugary things) and a bagged breakfast (sandwich, chips, candy bar) about an hour before landing. The drinks cart came around several times. Alcoholic drinks were not free for the past few years. I got upgraded to business class once; the food is much better there and the wine is free. For snacks, I usually carry one or two "health" bars of nuts, whole grains, dried fruits. There are several brands.

"Air Canada offers free meal service and snacks along with free beer, wines, and spirits on all their overseas flights. And a pillow and blanket. All classes." You Canadians - so civilized! <3

We flew with them in 2008, so it has been awhile, but we got not only food but free alcohol and chocolate too! Got to love that!

Monte you are right; last time we flew lufthansa economy was all daylight (Frankfurt to Los Angeles); the beer or wine flew quite freely (and free)

They always say "no meal". but you will get at least 2. Dinner and a very light breakfast (usually cellophane packed bread or sweet roll and a couple of other small items). In economy on Lufthansa you will also get free beer and wine with your meal. I bring a few snacks with me for the plane ride, but I'm a chocolohalic, so I need my chocolate. They don't sell food on board. International flights always serve free meals (at least that hasnt' changed yet). If you are still not certain, call Lufthansa and ask. They can tell you. We are booked on Air Canada in May and our reservation says "no meals", but I called to change seats and asked about meals and was told we get a hot dinner and then a light breakfast before we land. A lot has to do with the time of departure. If you leave in the evening (like most trans-Atlantic flights) you will get dinner and breakfast, as long as you arrive BEFORE 10AM local time) If you are flying domestically from west coast to east coast and connecting then to Europe, you will NOT get a free meal on that flight. Over water, they will feed you.

I just took a flight yesterday on Lufthansa from Munich to O'Hare and I absolutely got fed. Pat, you will be very pleased to know that the food on Lufthansa is an upgrade from anything served on a transatlantic US carrier. I got Thai chicken curry yesterday, and vegetarian pizza for a snack. The last time I flew Lufthansa, they ran out of the meat options so they gave me the vegetarian: dal makhani, which wasn't Brick Lane quality but far better than what I would have had normally.
Always check if in doubt, Stacy, but I'm 99.9% sure you'll be fed on your flight.

Thai chicken curry sounds good! I sometimes wonder why food is ( generally ) so bad I mean I know they only want to spend like 2-3 dollars on our meals but I have seen frozen entrees in grocers that aren't that bad and can be on special for less then 2 bucks sometimes, pretty sure an airline would get an even better price for a bulk buy contract! Question , does anyone ever eat the cello wrapped roll thats usually hard as a rock and about as tasty, lol

Well I was no a Lufthansa flight from Newark to Dusseldorf last month, and the food was disgusting; the worst I've ever had on any flight. It was some sort of pasta thing that was totally overcooked, dried out, and inedible. Yuck!

They're wrapping food in cellos now? We see them on the train from time-to-time but I would have thought they would have been difficult to get down the aisles - never mind onto those tiny tray tables...

Could the problem have been that the food was loaded from a Newark food service? I have noticed a clear difference in quality on food loaded in Philadelphia from local Aramark, as opposed to food from European services.

I have flown Lufthansa in the Economy Class Cabin a few times and have requested the Kosher Meal for a better quality meal . On my outbound in 2011 I got a hot dinner and then hot breakfast ( an egg sandwich with a hot chocolate pastry) it came with fruit and yogurt too. The drinks were free flowing. They had Campari, Bailyes Irish Cream, Scotch, Cognac, Sparkling Wine, Warsteiner Beer and the list goes on. In addition the non-alcoholic drinks were good too. They had a delicious Apple Cider drinks too. I will be flying on Lufthansa from Munich-SFO after taking a Trans Atlantic Cruise. I found the flight for this April for 30,000 United Milege Plus Miles. On the return flight you get two hot meals. The Kosher Meals for the most part are catered by Sohar's in Frankfurt and as they are a smaller caterer the meals are fresher. Last trip I got a HOt Salmon and Pasta dish and then before landing at SFO I got a Hot Pasta Dish. In the middle of the flight were snacks such as chocolate bars and the flight attendant opened up some more Sparkling Wine and gave me beer in the galley. They make many rounds with drinks too. The Personal TV's with Audio Video On Demand is a godsend. I would not fly on United because you have to pay for alcohol, and their entertainment is not as god as Lufthansa. I like their Airbus 340 flights with the 2-4-2 the Airbus 380 flights are good too. Enjoy your flight.
