Matterhorn and Swiss Rail & Zermatt information. Swiss Pass

I have not visited the base of the Matterhorn (Zermatt) since 1970. Does anyone know about a new tunnel connecting Interlaken with Brig or Visp?
Is there a clean, inexpensive hotel or hostel with private rooms in Zermatt?
If I will be in Switzerland for 4-5 days would a Swiss Pass be better than a Global Eurail Pass? ( I plan totravel in 5 other countries for 2 additional weeks )

I believe you mean the Kanderstag train. It is for cars. You drive onto the open train cars and sit in your car for the trip. It saves a lot of time and is worth what it costs. We used it last September and it was $12.50 euros at that time (according to my expense journal)

Re hotels or hostels: Is anything inexpensive in Zermatt? In May 06 we stayed in the Hotel Weisshorn in Zermatt. It was a clean, nice-sized room with a private shower/toilet and a helpful, English-speaking proprietor. Their website says the current price for a double is about $100-$150. I believe there are seasonal price differences.
Re rail passes: Think in terms of the number of days you will use the train/pass, not the number of days in a country. Then look at the RS website section on railpasses and you'll be able to answer your question.
