hello all,
posting here because malta is not listed in the destination menu. i am thinking of flying in from bari in the 1st week of june. wondering how many days i should spend there. my main interest is art and architecture. if nothing else i want to see the caravaggios! on the other hand, i am not interested in shopping, nature or gastronomy. i would be using airbnb and public transportation. also, i am a 'slow' traveler. i would really like your suggestions about places to visit and how long is a reasonable stay?
thanks!
We only spent one day on Malta while on a cruise. It's a place that's steeped in history going back to 2500 BC.
The port there is very worthwhile to see. Those huge stones making up a fortress were quarried in the Nile River basin, and were brought over by sailing ships. I don't know how the place was ever built.
I would think of you're a slow traveler, 4 days on Malta would be adequate.
@david: you are the 2nd person who has suggested 3-4 days! thank you.
Agree a long weekend would get you the basics, but if you have a week, you can fill it. I enjoyed a few days in Gozo and the rest on Malta, but I'm more of a nature nut. That said, there is a neolithic temple on Gozo as well.
We used Malta as a stepping-stone from Denver to Sicily, so we arrived jet-lagged and felt 4 nights was enough. But if you have more time you could surely fill it — for example with a trip to Gozo (which we did not do). We did see the Hypogeum — advance tickets were needed at the time since only small groups are allowed. The Caravaggios were spectacular! Check out a Malta guidebook and see what else appeals.
thank you all for your suggestions!
@ charlene: i didn't know about the hypogeum. looks really interesting. thanks for the tip!
