Making web page

We had a great ETBD trip in 2007. I want to enter the scrapbook contest, but I don't know how to create a web site. Can I do this for free, without ads? If not, which is the easiest to use (for a real novice)at a low cost? Any other tips that would be helpful? I have loads of great pictures and stories I would love to share and maybe even win my next trip! Also, my photos were taken with an 7.2 megapixel camera. Will the program automatically make the files smaller so that they will load more quickly, or do I have to do that myself--and how do I do that? Thanks!

Barbara,

After looking through the rules it does seem a little unfair to offer a contest opent to only those who are tech saavy but this is a marketing tool for them so they have their reasons for asking for it that way.

1. Do you have someone in your circle that is a little bit saavy? Can you recruit them? (Hint: offer to take them with you if you win)

2. Check with who you get your email from, many providers allow you to host a small web site as well. If it is a yahoo or google type account then do a search for "free web hosting" and make sure they won't put ads. You can also go the bargain route like godaddy.com which will host for 3$-4$ a month as sell you a domain name for as low as .99 (i.e. barbarasebtd07.com)

3. Then what you need to look for is a drag-and-drop template-based web building program. There are many free ones or ones that are free in their trial version (these will limit page numbers etc....).Too many for me to list, again make sure they don't contain adds. If you are using a Mac try iWeb it is simple to use. Different sites will have different templates, pick the one that matches your style and go forward. (After looking over the previous winners I am guessing that they were all template based, and some had some small ads. (no offense meant if you guys are graphic web designers).

Just because your camera can take pictures at 7megapx doesn't mean it was. Most cameras allow you choose how many because it decides how many photos you can fit on your storage card etc... Typically low numbers are good for webpages, high numbers are good for enlargments.

Barbara,

First you need to get a book about web sites in general, nothing complicated, but you need to understand how a web site works. You don't need to know HTML (this the programming language used by web sites), but you need to know some things.
Secondly, I don't believe there are web sites out there free of charge and free of ads at the same time, but there are many cheap ones.I have a web site registered with 1and1.com .They register the name for free or maybe they charge a few $ now, but you have to pay some money for hosting it. You also can create a web page on a blog kind of site. Those sites are free of charge, but your web site address will be long, something like blog.yourname.com.
Can you send me a link with details about the contest?

There are lots of great tools now for instant web pages. If yorue a MAC person - its built in! Space is cheap now - so almost any provider will sell you space - and you can buy your own domain name.com etc for 10$ at go daddy (they even have tools to help build!) For a PC person - lots of great and inexpensive tools. Or ask your local neighborhood kids! :)

Its dificult to suggest specifics without knowing your level of PC/MAC skills. But even basic MS-Word can be turned into a web page. If you can type and past/scan/import your pictures.

i'm not sure if you need to create the webpage from scratch or not, but i have an online travel blog at www.mylifeoftravel.com or you can also build an actual webpage by using templates at www.freewebs.com

I have used both of these and the are quite easy to navagate (especially at free webs)
