maintaining energy/stamina while sightseeing

I can always pop a 5-hour energy shot while in the US if I need an energy boost. Is there anything comparable in Europe? Traveling to Germany, Czech Republic, Hungary and Austria in May. Joy~

I'm fairly certain this question is a goof...but I'll play along: Red Bull was invented and is owned by a European company...Austrain to be precise

Nope, sorry, caffeine is a banned substance in the EU. The ban went into effect on March 15, 2011 but was not widely reported in the US press.

Just asked my husband how to maintain energy/stamina. He said "don't go".

You might consider approaching this from another angle. Get enough sleep each night, eat properly, and pace yourself throughout the day. There's still a good chance you'll get tired, but nothing you can't overcome.

Take an afternoon break, as many locals do in Italy and Spain, especially if you are dining late. (It's OK to do this in other countries, too! LOL!) it's nice to get up early and hit the sights before the crowds. I love to see cities wake up! But then after lunch, taking a nap, catching up on email, reading a book, takign a shower, all lead to a second wind. Then we hit the streets again for a walk about 16:30, have a coffee, see a church or museum that is open late, have an aperitivo. Then to dinner about 20:00. The days we missed our pausa we were very tired.

Joy, What type of "energy shot" do you get in the U.S.? Is this needed due to a medical condition? One method that usually works for me, is to start exercise and conditioning a month or so prior to the trip. Increasing the frequency of visits to the Gym is a good start. Happy travels!

Sounds like it would be much more fun to sit at an outdoor cafe and have that coffee from a cup Or a stein!

@ Michael 1, Thanks for the clarification on the "5-hour energy shot". I've never heard of that, and assumed the "shot" was an injection (which is why I wondered about a medical condition). I find that a good cup of coffee and regular exercise is the best combination for me. Cheers!

Slooooooow Dooooooown! If you are pushing pushing pushing so hard that you have to have a "boost" mid-day, you are going about it the wrong way. IMHO of course. One of my favorite parts of any trip is sitting in the middle of a great big church and just looking. I may sit there for 30 minutes just taking it all in. My travel companion is walking around taking picture after picture, but I just sit there and marvel. When we get back home I have to remind him what the pictures are because he is too busy taking pictures to actually "see" anything. Or like another poster stated, sit in a cafe and have a cup of coffee and a pastry. That's a great way to not only relax for a minute or two, but also to see the other side of vacation. Give me a cafe over a museum anytime. Or even a laundry mat. I've had great times just doing laundry. Great way to meet the locals and experience their culture. By the way, have a great trip!

Hi. I just returned from Europe. We drove through 5 countries so we would stop at the rest stations for gas or the restroom.. My husband usually drinks energy drinks as well.. while they dont have the assortment that we have over here in the US.. we did see lots of Coke Light, Coke.. and even regular canned energy drinks.

5 hours?!? I think you're supposed to see a doctor for anything lasting more than 4 hours.
