I´m in Europe for the next two weeks (flying out of Madrid 6/11/2011) and I´m not sure where to go from here. Originally I was planning on heading south through Seville, Tarifa, and Grenada. But after reading Rick´s book it doesnt sound like I will have a lot of fun there. I like architecture and history, but after touring Madrid and a town right outside of it I feel like Ive seen enough cathedrals. I would love to experience some sort of adventure travel like hiking, biking, cool swimming spots, anything active instead of just walking through another old town. I also live near a beach and as such I don´t particularly want a beach resort. Do you have any suggestions for places a backpacker could go? I´m a budget traveler (hostels, cheapest transportation possible), female, traveling alone. Any suggestions would be appreciated!
Picos de Europa national park. Camino de Santiago north coast from Santander to Coruna (any section, the more west the better)
Camino de Santiago would be my first recommendation. Second -- Cantabria - The "green Spain" in the area of Santander - and all along that section of Spain. Or, if you want a great adventure, check out www.vaugnatown.com -- Spanish and Anglos together in a great location for a week -- you will learn more of Spain and its people in one week there than any other way for sure.
Santiago de Compostela is a great idea. You could pick a spot and hike the Camino to Santiago! Here's a link to the map showing the route: http://www.santiago-compostela.net/
