Lycamobile for SIM cards

I'm on https://www.lycamobile.it/en/bundles_1 and seeing a SIM card bundle called "Lyca Globe" that is just 10 Euros. It seems a little too good to be true!

It looks like if each of my family members gets one of those we can do unlimited calls and texts to each other, and get 8G of data which is more than enough. I don't quite get how the "EU roaming" will work, but I think we're sufficiently covered (we're starting in Rome and then going on to Switzerland, France and UK.)

  1. Has anyone used this bundle? If so, has it worked out for you?
  2. I don't see an option to pay for it online - it looks like new customers have to go into a Lyca store? Are the bundles shown online available when you walk into a store?
  3. As far as Lyca stores in Rome - is the language barrier likely to be less at Termini, rather than a small place in Trastevere (near where we're staying.)

Thanks,

Paul

I haven't used Lycamobile - thought I have sitting here an unopened Lycamobile SIM I just bought on Amazon for 1 cent (including shipping). I bought it only as a SIM to test phones to see if they are unlocked. I have no idea if it will work in Europe and wasn't planning to try.

10 euros for that amount of data is a good deal. But, it seems Lycamobile does not allow tethering (hotspot) or VPN, and I use both of those. If you don't, this may work great. Seems in Italy, Lycamobile uses Vodafone's network for 2G/3G - not sure who they use for 4G. This blog has some more info but it may be out of date (I think Lycamobile now allows 4G roa

For me, the Dutch Vodafone SIM is still a better deal than this, because I can get 2GB of data for 10 euros (or 6GB for 20 euros) and it allows both tethering and VPN. The SIM can be bought on eBay for about $5 USD plus shipping and completely activated from home, and it's possible to keep it alive and re-use it on future trips. It's not a great choice if you need to make voice calls to non-Dutch numbers, though (I don't care about that - I just need data). People generally recommend TIM or Vodafone SIMs if you buy one in Italy - not sure how Lycamobile stacks up or what you give up (besides tethering and VPN etc.).

I have used Lycamobile in the past and service it was fine. You have to go to any Lyca store to get a free SIM with your telephone #. Then you can either have them activate it or purchase the Lyca Globe bundle online. Following is from their website.

Get started
You can get started with Lycamobile by following these easy steps:
Step 1:
Register and activate your SIM at your local retailer.
You will require personal identification to complete your registration.
Step 2:
Insert your Lycamobile SIM card into your mobile and switch it on.
Step 3:
You can now make and receive calls and send SMS’ from your Lycamobile.
