Luxembourg "old town"

My sister and I are planning a one day trip to Luxembourg from Liege. What is the best way to get from the train station to "Old Town"? I've read that that is where they have the best views. Some of the reviews for Hop On Hop Off say that it doesn't go to Old Town and I can't find a route map for the regular bus. And we don't want to walk up hills. Are there any Luxembourg experts out there who could share some good advice??

Hi Dianne, we did this in April. And it is very easy to take a local city bus from the train station to the old own. There are several routes that go from the train station through the old town. As I recall we purchased a day pass for just a few Euros. Here is a map of the local bus routes...

The bus is available or you could just grab a cab. It's not far.

Even though it looks corny, I suggest you look into the Petrusse Express. It's a tram that looks like a train and will take you on a guided tour of the lower part of the old city. You catch it near the Boch Casements.

If you don't like hills, you definitely don't want to walk it.

Thanks ang84335. That bus map is just what I was looking for. Did you like Luxembourg? And Frank II....it sure wouldn't be the first time I took one of those hokey little tourist trains. It serves the purpose. And did you like Luxembourg?

You're welcome and yes we enjoyed our visit very much. We spent the morning visiting the American Military Cemetery and the afternoon wandering around the old town. I was a little surprised by how normal the area was and the distinct lack of touristy things like gift shops and chain restaurants there were, but I think this also contributed to the charm of the city. When we were there the end of April, the Adolphe Bridge was covered in scaffolding. The bus system was very easy to use. I found it difficult to find much information about Luxembourg. There is a pretty good tourist information booth in the train station and at least one of the gentlemen working when we went spoke decent English. Definitely stop by and get a free city map., you won't regret it. Also we had sausage and treats from the little stand in the train station for a quick lunch and it was very good.

I liked Luxembourg city. I was there for three days which is probably more time than you need.

I also liked the fact that it hadn't become too tacky with tourist stuff or even overrun with tourists.

Thanks again for your comments. Very helpful. I think I will stop at that tourist info booth at the station to make sure I have everything right (which doesn't happen often). To geovagriffith...I did notice Viaden. It really looks interesting but it doesn't look like the train from Liege stops there.
