Luxembourg hiking base and public transportation

We will be in Luxembourg for 6-9 days in July.

Having been to Ettelbruck and Clervaux before, wondering if Echternach would be possible for a 3-4 day base for hiking. We would prefer to use public transportation and not rent a car.
Also, would like to visit 2 small towns that were home to my ancestors - any suggestions for hiring a private guide for a day? Thanks

Echternach is known for it’s hiking trails, like the Mullerthal Trail. I have visited as a kid once relatives staying at a campsite there and we followed one of the trails to Echternach. Have to say it must been over 50 years ago, so can’t remember the details, so which trail it was but I liked the hike.

Good thing about Luxembourg is that public transport is free. So you can take the bus to nearby places that are the starting point of other trails, like Berdorf and Consdorf. For planning transport I have found this website: https://www.mobiliteit.lu/en/plan-a-trip/

Don't know much about Clervaux, but found this website that can be of use: https://www.visit-clervaux.lu/en/nature/hiking

Thanks for the replies. Am hoping either Echternach or Vianden will work without a car and a chance to walk 10-15 km each day without too much time on buses (if needed). The transportation link is helpful.

Carol, I'm interested to hear how this trip went for you and what you did. We are considering a similar trip next year.

If you didn’t see it on your previous trip, I highly recommend a visit to the the amazing WWII museum in Diekirch while you’re there. Have a great trip!
