Luxembourg

Hi everyone. My husband and I are taking the Germany, Austria and Switzerland tour this May and we are adding 4 nights in Paris to the beginning. I have looked at trains from Paris to Trier, and the best routes seem to have a connection in Luxembourg. I was thinking that if we left Paris early in the morning, we could take a couple of hours to look around Luxembourg before heading to Trier, as the train rides aren't that long. I was thinking of leaving Paris around 8 and getting to Luxembourg around 10:30, staying until about 1:30 and then arriving in Trier around 2:30. Has anyone does this? I'm not sure how close to the center of the city the train station is and whether it would be worth a quick look around. I can't imagine another reason we would see Luxembourg, but I don't want to cram too much in. Either way we would connect through Luxembourg, but the alternative would be leaving Paris later or getting to Trier earlier and making a quicker connection. I appreciate any tips or advice. Thanks!

Tamara,

most train stations are in the city proper and close to or sometimes the hub of other transportation points.

Luxembourg City is no different. Many of the buses go near or stop at the train station.

break out a map of Luxembourg city and see what you would like to see. I walked to the older part of the city everyday since that is where most of the stuff was that i wanted to see. For me and my speed of walking, it was about a 10~15 minute walk and i was about 1 block SE of the station. I did stop by everyday at a local coffee shop just before you cross the bridge.

note that i didnt do what you want to do. Also, I'm not sure what provisions the train station has for luggage.

Happy trails.

To my opinion too is Luxembourg city certainly worth a few hours walk through the old city centre just north of the railway station. There is a TI at Place Guillaume II, close to the Notre-Dame Cathedral and with the city bus easy to get there. http://www.lcto.lu/en/

I can´t imagine if there is no left luggage at the railway station. Have no personal experience, but according Trip Advisor there is a luggage room, so think about the opening hours.

Thanks so much for your tips! I'll look into it more, I just wanted to make sure it wasn't a crazy unrealistic idea. Thanks for your help!

Luxembourg City's city center is very small and you can do a lot in a couple hours. You can walk from the main train station to the center proper, with the casemates, fortress, Ville Haute (Upper City), and Ville Basse (Lower City).

Hi Tamara,
My husband did this very thing summer 2013 when we took the GAS tour, although we stayed one night there. We really enjoyed walking The Grund, which is the older part of Luxembourg City. If I remember correctly, the train station is a half hour leisurely walk from The Grund, faster if you don't shop or stop on the way. I think a few hours would be plenty. You may want to give yourself an extra hour, just in case. The older part of the city is quite beautiful and not to be missed, plus it eases the stress of having to hurry back. The train station is small and easy to navigate, and the train ride to Trier was only about 45 min. Once you get to Trier the walk to the hotel was maybe 30 minutes with RS's easy to follow direction.

Have a good time, I know we did!!!

Always thought this would be a great stop but never had the chance until 2009. Still interested in going that year, it was one evening in Munich beer hall, talking with truck drivers, who said a trip would be both history and shopping experience which convinced me to make a stop. The old city as told above has much to lure, and the stores are quite delightful. The train journey and stations was easy. Spend an afternoon, or better two days with an overnight. Will go again.
