I am planing a trip to Vianden, Luxembourg in spring of 2010. I am especially interested in points of interest in nearby France, Germany and Belgium; plus lodging. And, should I fly into Brussels, Frankfurt or ? and take the train to Luxembourg area. I welcome any help on flights as well.
Been there, done that, loved the place. I guess tastes vary. I don't recall the cost of admission to the castle but it obviously wasn't enough to put me off. The castle is beautifully restored, big and impressive, and unlike so many castles it was not overrun with crowds - we had the place to ourselves. The view over the river and small town below was spectacular, too - like right out of a fairy tale. We really loved the place and would like to go back sometime. Luxembourg is great - and few Americans bother to go. Ssshhhhhh - don't tell anyone!
I visited Vianden last spring with my Air Force son who is stationed nearby at Spangdahlem, Germany. We visited the castle and I enjoyed it. We could tour at our own pace (as opposed to having to join a tour at Burg Eltz) and it wasn't all that crowded, either. It was my son's second visit and he enjoyed it even though he'd been there before.
I can't help much on flights as I had been visiting Paris and took the train to Trier from there (through Lux. City.)
Something I didn't know before visiting Luxembourg was that there is an American Military Cemetery at Lux. City and that is where Patton is buried. A point of interest if you like history. Trier also has some interesting sites.
