Lugguge Challenge

Daughter studing for a semester in Milan. Plan is for me to fly out at end of her semester and we travel for two weeks. She's seen a lot of Northern Italy and wants to explore south of naples. Here's my challenge: What to do with her 50 pound suitcases (two) during the trip. Her student housing closes end of June. Almost all her friends are not from Milan and will leaving the same time she does.

Suggestions?

Is she there now ? If she is not there, then my advice may have some value. Our study abroad office advised our son to take only one to two weeks of clothing to get through the first couple of weeks. Then buy locally as needed. Students generally want to wear what their peer group is wearing. Don't buy a lot but wear it hard. We actually visited over spring break and carried home all of his original clothes. At the end of the term he gave away things that he didn't want to bring leaving one big suitcase with his school stuff. Since this is common problem check with the university His university provided a somewhat security area to store his luggage till he returned from an extra month of traveling. Lugging around two 50lb cases will be taxing.

She is there now. That would have been good advice! She's been there since January. Seems like buying clothese there would have been a pretty expensive option (especially for fashion conscious young women in Milan)

Assuming that she is flying home from Milan, she might want to look at cost and possibility of leaving with left luggage office at Milan train station.

School might also have suggestions.

thanks for your reply. I'm not familiar with left luggage places at trainstations in europe. I assumed it was just for day storage. Can one usually leave luggage for a couple weeks? I don't mind paying for this. Yes we will be flying home out of milan.

Storing your extra luggage at either a train station or airport is the best option. I have left business attire at the Frankfurt Airport so I could tour for a week with only my casual clothes. It relies on you coming back through to pick it up before you fly home.

Leave it in the airport left luggage. I am not familiar with the storage at the train stations, but I left my luggage in the airport in Rome.
You can check online for fee etc.

Would it be feasible, and cost-effective, to mail stuff back home first?

Mailing stuff is usually prohibitively expensive. The only reasonable rate is if you are military. The bases charge the same rate to mail packages as if you are mailing a parcel from a US post office (at least it used to be that way, haven't done it in years).
