I am traveling to some small towns in France on the train for four days. I do not want to take my big suitcase with me to all those locations.
Can you leave your luggage in a locker at the train station in Paris for a few days? Would it be safe(just with clothes). Has anyone done this? Is there a charge?
There are 6 major train stations in Paris, and 4 have baggage check/storage facilities; however the old-style luggage lockers have been, or are quickly being, phased out due to security concerns (people leaving bombs in the lockers). These are the 4 stations that have baggage check/storage: Gare du Nord, Gare Montparnasse, Gare de Lyon, and Gare d'Austerlitz. Gare de l'Est was renovated last year and I don't know whether the new configuration has baggage check. Gare St. Lazare did not have baggage check in 2007 and my guess is still does not. These are far from free, there is a charge to use baggage check and they're not accessible 24 hours a day.
If you will be spending the night in Paris after you return from your small-town sojourn, find a hotel that will store your luggage for you and leave it with them.
I've done this, though not in Paris. The hotel was glad to do this for me at no charge.
Adam's suggestion is a very good one. Besides, I think there is a 72-hour limit on storage at the train stations.
