Luggage for Children

Now that we live in the US we need to make frequent trips back to France to see the family. My son is getting close to 4 and interested and able to carry a small rolling suitcase. Does anyone have any reccomendations about fun luggage for kids that is also durable. I have seen plenty of novelty stuff out there but the quality is not such that it will last several international trips.

It doesn't need to be too big (mostly for his toys and books) nor does security have to be to important (it's not like he's in charge of the passports too.:) Just durable.

If you know of any brands or web sites....
Thank you for the help.

A durable rolling bag, even a small one, is going to be heavy, at least for a 4-year-old. You will probably end up carrying it a lot.

Probably you've thought of that, but here are two alternatives: a regular knapsack, or a lightweight (though not durable) rolling bag. Since these are less sturdy, you'd probably not want to check it.

You'd end up carrying such a bag some, too, but at least it would be lighter.

Samsonite do a range of small luggage with slideaway handle and wheels. They produce them in a range of pastel and primary colours. They're as tough as old boots and, although a little expensive, the length of durability makes the cost worth while.

I would consider the Lands End website for their backpacks specifically made for small children.

We always bought the kids the novelty suitcases. They lasted about as long as the kids interest in that particular character, and at $20 or less, we figured if we got a year or two out of them they were good. The matching Thomas the Tank backpack and suitcase have lasted for two years of being dragged EVERYWHERE by my nephew. My sister even had it cleaned once because it had gotten so nasty. Of course, there is the issue of your dignity in walking through the airport with a bright blue train . . .

Heys has a line of hard-sided rolling suitcases just for children - they are only about 3 lbs. and have kid-geared graphics. You can see them at www.hbc.com
