luggage

will be taking several suitcases traveling with the family in Europe. would like to send ahead. any suggestions on what firm may be reasonable. the ususal suspects are fairly expensive

Sorry, Kevin, we are more of a carryon crowd here. I haven't taken more than a single bag in years, though I usually check it. I haven't seen any cheap options mentioned here for shipping luggage ahead.

They are all expensive. We checked a few years ago for a study abroad program and could find no cheap way with any type of arrival guarantee. Of course, the natural question many will ask, "Why several suitcases?" If carrying stuff one way to family in Europe then you might consider the US Postal system. It will be the cheapest AND slowest in the range of a couple of weeks.

I presume you are talking about one suitcase per person. Check with your carrier. Delta lets you check that amount without charge on international flights, and I presume that some other carriers do the same.
