I understand that Lufthansa only allows a bag 22x16x8 as a carryon, weighing no more than 18 pounds. We are generally carryon people, but I don't see me getting my bag down to 19 pounds, and we just invested in several Travelpro pieces, so I doubt I'll spend the extra money on new luggage. My concern is my 19inch roller is 9 inches deep--smaller overall, but will the 9 inch depth be a problem?
The Lufthansa website has exact details on the dimensions allowed. It's possible they'll be relaxed about enforcing them, but obviously no one here can predict whether on the day you travel that will be the case. If your bags exceed their rules, you probably want to have a Plan B just in case they do enforce their rules to the letter. Airlines these days have been known to do that.
Lufthansa's weight limit is 8kg, 17.6#. So with your Travelpro bag, you only get 10.1# or less of actual "stuff". Get rid of the Travelpro bag and use a grocery sack (paper one).
I have had my bag weighed by Lufthansa.
Another problem with most rollaboards, I don't know if it applies here, is that they have a fairly rigid compartment (kind of a necessity for rollaboards), so they don't conform real easily to the sizing box that Lufthansa uses. On the other hand, my Campmor bag is wheel- and frame-less and easily conforms to almost any size (plus it only weighs 1-3/4#).
Rules are rules but many seem to want to test them or hope for relaxed enforcement. Some make it but many don't. Never assume relaxed enforcement. Lee's comment on the type of bag is great advice. One other hint is to wear some of your heavier clothing items onto the plane to lighten some of your carryon weight. I have flown Lufthansa but my one bag was checked. My carry on was a small backpack with prescriptions and other light items. They didn't weigh it. Of course, you can fly business class and be permitted two such 17.6# bags.
Theresa,
We flew Lufthansa last month and they were pretty strict with us. I don't know if you are connecting to a Lufthansa flight, but we carried on as long as we could and then checked ours at the gate for the Lufthansa flight.
They had a baggage sizing box at the gate to make sure it was the right size. I think if our bags were packed to the actual size of the bag we'd have been ok but ours were flexible bags so had a nice bulge in them from all the stuff we crammed in.
Thanks for all the replies. I think I'm going to pack the 19 inch and take it to the airport to see if it fits. If not, we'll probably just check bags.
a couple of years ago my husband had to pay a fine to get his carry on onboard. enforcement is lax sometimes, strict others. i would play it safe!
When messing with my luggage last night, it's clear that the pockets on the front are the extra inch. If I push it down, no problem getting to 8 inches. Wonder if a luggage strap would ensure that for me?
Well, we decided to leave the wheeled luggage and home and invest in new bags-Red Oxx Air Boss bags. Now, I'm fretting over our "personal items." I'm taking a camera bag from Crumpler--no problem there. Debating on what my husband should carry that won't get second glances. I don't want to take any chances.
Theresa, a RS Civita Day Pack will not get a second glance by Lufthansa as a carry-on. It holds quite a bit of stuff and weighs nothing. Everytime I fly Lufthansa I've had to check my bag; however, my daughter and son-in-law never have to check theirs (they have RS original back-pack). Lufthansa is very strict about weight.
