Lucern or Bern?

I have several days to discover the area around Bern and Lucerne but can't decide where to stay. I'm looking for easy access to the train that isn't too expensive. I am traveling with my husband and mother. We want to visit both towns. Can anyone recommend a B&B or hotel and the location we should use as a "home base'?

I prefer Luzern over Bern. Although Bern is more centrally located. I've never stayed overnight in either place. Most people like stay closer to the Alps like in the Berner Oberland region: Interlaken, Lauterbrunnen, Wegnen, Murren, Gimmelwald. Is there a specific reason you want to stay in one of the cities instead of the middle of the beautiful mountains?

Bonnie,

I was in Luzern a few weeks ago, and enjoyed my time there immensely! I stayed at Hotel Goldener Stern and would certainly recommend it (details and rates are listed in the Guidebook).

As it turned out, I ended up spending an extra day in Luzern as the weather was quite "inclement" in the Appenzell area. There was no shortage of activities or Museums to keep busy with. I spent a wonderful day at the Museum of Transport, but ran out of time so didn't get a boat cruise on the lake this time (good excuse to return).

Happy travels!

I prefer Lucerne too, more to see and do, if i had several i would spend 2 nights in Lucerne, a daytrip to Bern and the rest in the Lauterbrunnen Valley.

Definitely Lucern, the city has more to offer a tourist than Bern. Both cities are connected by rail and trains between the two cities are quite frequent.

20 years ago (I can't believe it!) my husband and I stayed in Luzern for about a week, having chosen it as home base, and it worked out wonderfully. We did a day trip to Bern, took excursions to mountains and on the lake (ship to the far end, train back, stopping in Schweiz), went to the transportation museum ... I'd do it again tomorrow!

If you do have "several days",use Luzern as your base. Then you can take a short train ride up to Bern for a nice visit-the best of both worlds.
