Lost passport - extra photos?

I'm travelling overseas in a few weeks, and I've been reading that you should take extra passport photos in case you lose yours and need to get a replacement. I got my passport six years ago, and do not have any extra photos that match the one in my current passport. Can I just go get different passport photos taken, even though they are different from the one I currently have?

I didn't take extra passport photo's with me because I figured that I could get those taken overseas if I encountered a problem. I did bring along copies of my passport's important pages though.

The main thing to do is have copies of your passport, good copies, especially the photo page. Keep a set in your luggage and leave a set with someone at home, so they can fax it to you if necessary. Any Consulate that does passports usually has a photo machine that will take the correct photo. If you aren't sure, look up the consulate in the country or city where you will be going and check. Consulates no longer make the passports themselves like they used to, they send them to the states to be made and then send it back to the Consulate. The easiest thing is to guard your passport. If you lose it or have it stolen, you get a special stamp in your new one that lasts for 10 years that will cause those nice guys at Immigration to ask you questions when you come back into the US. If perchance you lose that one too before those 10 years are up, you have to get a passport every year. Yep, valuable document. Take care of it.

It would be a remote need to replace a passport, but there are some transit cards (longer term ones in Paris and other places) where you do need to provide a passport type photo for the card....so, it may not hurt to tuck a couple new ones in your moneybelt.

I have a color photocopy of my passport that I keep with two (more recent)passport photos in with tiny font info of emergency #s (medical #s, lost credit card, bank, etc)on a 3 X 5 card...it goes in a ziplock that I keep in a seam of my suitcase. These extra photos would be used to make you a new passport to replace your lost one and possibly expedite the process. I don't know if it helps or not, but I register with the State Dept on their online form thing, too.

Also, scan and email to yourself, a copy of the front page (photo and details) of your passport. Similarly with tickets, insurance and any other important bits and bobs.
