I've been using the same plastic 3.4-oz. bottles for years but one of them is finally starting to crack. I assume my others will follow, so I'm starting the search for new shampoo, conditioner, and face wash containers. I've been looking at Go Toobs and was wondering if anyone here uses them and if so, what you think. The 3-oz. tubes seem too big to fit in a quart bag along with the rest of my items, but the 2-oz. tubes don't quite seem big enough for a 2-week trip. Are they well made? Do they hold up for years? I appreciate any advice or recommendations.
Sarah, I had a look at the GoToobs on the Magellans website, but they seem to be a bit on the "pricey" side. Something like THESE products should work well. Cheers!
In my opinion ghe Go Toobs cost too much and are too big for the amount of liquid they hold. I bought a three pack and tried them out with vodka and water. All three leaked. Lots of people swear by them and I think they are okay for more viscous liquids. The ones pictured in the picture the other poster sent work well. Sometimes you can find single items in the correct size in the sample displays at grocery or stores like Shopko. I have looked and looked for 100ml size bottles that are convenient sized for the paranoia bag and haven't much luck. The ones we use are like the two on the left side of the picture and we buy them as we find them in sample displays. We have gotten our liquids down to almost zero except for some medicinal alcohol. I also take a three ounce holy water bottle I found on the beach a long time ago that is filled with vodka. The solid shampoo we use is from Lush (lush.com). It is expensive but since using it that's all I use at home too. There are various kinds, some with conditioner. You are right, the two ounce containers don't hold enough to take on a vacation. Just peruse the sample displays and see what you can fine. Oh, Tom's mouthwash bottles are just the right size and some Scotch whisky matches the color of original contents.
I have the 2 oz Go Toobs in 4 different colors and really like them. I've had mine for several years. During that time, I've probably made about 50 business trips plus several vacations so I'd say that they hold up well. They are extremely easy to fill because the mouth of the tube is wide. Also, it is easy to get all of the contents out of the tube. You know how in some travel bottles moisturizer or conditioner gets stuck in the bottom of the bottle? This doesn't happen in the silicon tubes ... partly because you can squeeze them and partly because the silicon helps the lotion to slide out. Yes, they are expensive, but supposedly they have a lifetime warranty. Regarding Monte's problem with them ... Go to the compatibility page of their website GoToob compatibility and click on the tabs for hair products, etc. to see if your brand of shampoo/conditioner is listed as incompatible. They have a pretty long list of incompatible fluids (e.g. they say you can't use them for whiskey). I haven't had any problem with them leaking. Is 2 oz enough for 2 weeks --- not really. But I use hotel shampoo and conditioner when it is available, so the 2 oz containers just cover me when the hotel doesn't supply. For face wash, 2 oz has been enough.
I like the ones I found at the Container Store. They're made out of Nalgene and they haven't leaked on me yet. http://www.containerstore.com/shop/travel/bottlesMedication?productId=10000243&N=253
Target has a whole gondola of travel items in their Pharmacy. Needless to say the prices are great.
I agree, Target has the best travel section in their pharmacy. The inventory varies but I'd bet you can find some travel friendly plastic containers there at much less than you would pay anywhere else.
I use Nalgene containers (bottles and jars), and I've never had one fail. I buy mine at Mountain Equipment Co-op which is a Canadian store, but the same things are carried at REI in the US. Very reasonable prices, IMO.
I use Tupperware. They have 2 and 4 oz containers. The lids stay on tight and they last forever!! They even have a lifetime warranty as well!! Happy Travels!!
Not that I acutally shop there, but I just returned from my local Walmart. I passed by the travel size toiletries area just to have a look-see since I'm headed to Austria in a week. There were plastic bottles of all shapes, some even had spray nozzles. The most expensive was 97 cents. I wouldn't know if thats a good price or not since I never shop at Walmart. Thats my story and I'm sticking to it!
Thank you all for the helpful suggestions! @Allen - I don't shop at Walmart either. They could sell travel bottles for 1 cent but it wouldn't get me in there!
Me either. We have a friend who sneaks in through the automotive department bays so no one she knows will see her. She hopes.
I shop at Walmart and I'm not ashamed to admit it. Of course, I'm not an elitist snob.
I think it has less to do with being an elitist snob than it does the fact that they exploit their employees and pay them so little that many are also on public assistance. Many people have a problem with that.
Not any different from most all other retail employers.
"...Not any different from most all other retail employers..." Not so. Many supermarket chains are unionized, full-time employees can make over $50,000 a year plus medical and pension. Wal-Mart doesn't even come close to that.
Walmart intentionally keeps their people under the required hours to be fulltime, just so that they do not have to offer them benefits.
I love go tubes. Been using the 2&3 ounce sizes for 3 years now. 2 ounce shampoo for 2 weeks does me fine; since I color my hair red, I only wash it every other day. Easy to clean and fill.
Thanks, Kelly - I'll add them to my list! @Nancy - that's exactly my problem with Walmart and Sams. It's one thing for people to shop there who can't afford to go anywhere else, but I do have a problem with people who can, yet choose to go there because they like the cheap prices. I know that no giant retailer is perfect, but Walmart has treated and continues to treat their employees badly. They used to make their employees clock out but continue working so no one would find out about their illegal overtime. I believe we have a responsibility to be conscientious consumers as much as we can. I like the look and performance of Apple products as much as anyone else but knowing what goes on at Foxconn in China, I can't buy anything Apple unless it's secondhand, like my iPod Touch.
IMHO, the only way to find out if you like a bottle is to buy one and try it out. Some of my best travel containers are reused from prior lives - I use a squirt bottle from some kind of lotion for my shampoo, and an old Dr. Bronners bottle for my hair gel. Also, fill one up at home and see how long it takes you to go through it. I personally can go 3 weeks using 2 ounces of shampoo, but always pack a 3 ounce bottle anyway. For what it's worth, Nalgene bottles are just about indestructible and I've never had one go bad, though for some reason they don't make 3 ounce versions. Your local REI (1703 S Brentwood Blvd) will have a wide selection. You can also check out the Go Toobs there - I haven't used them but agree they're a weird shape for a 3-1-1 bag.
Target and Wallmart. Been using the bottles for years.
I recycle my haircolor's containers for shampoo/conditioner so I can toss the bottles when empty. For the rest, definitely Container Store Nalgene: http://www.containerstore.com/shop/travel/bottlesMedication?N=253
Also use their clear plastic jars for jewelry while traveling.
Another vote for the Container Store. They have great variety in both style of bottle and sizes -- I have several that I've had for years. They are great and a great value.
Thank you CL, JB, Melissa, and Kim.
I've used these for years and really like them - they're not as large (thick) as Go Toobs, so I can shove more into my 3-1-1 bag :-( It's a bit trickier filling them than Go Toobs...watch the video. Also, be sure to check out the flasks - they come in handy for water...and many other liquids. Just sayin'.
I got mine at The Container Store years ago and use them every week for business trips and they are holding up just fine.
Honestly, I just pick up a new three-pack at Target for something like $3 anytime the old ones need replaced. Some of the brands previously mentioned go for something like $20 for three...that's insane. As for Walmart, their history of worker exploitation is well-documented in this country, and they have even decided to get into the bribery and corruption game in Mexico. I can't visit a Walmart...their clientele can churn the stomach (no offense to present company, of course).
