looking for ideas

All - looking for ideas of where to travel (within Europe OR Elsewhere (South America? Asia? Japan?). we have about 3 weeks or so available from very late Feb to 3/20/24. Just got back from a lovely month in London. Loved Portugal, Prague and Vienna on a trip last Fall. Been to Paris, Florence/Rome, Madrid and southern Spain on prior trips. Looking for ideas for something a bit un-expected. possibilities: ?Scandinavia/Finland, Croatia?, Greece?, Berlin?, Japan (though we have never done a tour, but may need one for that travel).

This is such an insightful group - would love to hear thoughts!

Greece? For me in the colder weather, south is where I look. Also check out Monday Night Travel (click on Home above and the link is there). Rick just returned from Morrocco and gives a wonderful report about his trip.

Probably the best time of the year for South East Asia, or Australia or New Zealand, French Polynesia etc. A bit early for Japan - cherry blossom season usually doesn't kick off till the end of March (weather dependant).

I wouldn't want to go to Scandinavia or Finland that early in the year; there'd be insufficient sunlight for me. I prefer the much-longer days you get closer to June. There would also potentially be quite cold weather, and lots of rain in some areas (including Bergen and Helsinki). You can take a look at monthly-average climate data in the Wikipedia entries for the major cities.

marybeth,
Feb-Mar is a great time to visit Egypt. We took a 12 day tour there (10 full days on the ground) in February 2019 with Trafalgar Tours and loved it. Two full days in Cairo, a seven day Nile cruise, day trip (by plane) from Aswan to Abu Simble, followed by another full day in Cairo before returning home. We visited all the places I hoped for. The tour had 38 people and a superb guide. We did not feel like part of a mob, as the tour members were a fun and congenial lot. Accommodations, our boat, food, activities and tours were all great and it was one of the best times I have had traveling. (The fact that Egypt was my number one bucket list item didn't hurt.) And the price was in the moderate range...worth every penny! Your 3 weeks would give you time for Egypt AND a trip to Jordan, which everyone who has been there raves about. Or perhaps a stopover in Istanbul? It is worth consideration. Should you do go there, don't fly Lufthansa. It has gone downhill re service and comfort, IMO. I used to choose Lufthansa a lot. Turkish Air has been a good choice for us more recently, and a stopover in Istanbul could be an opportunity to see some of a fascinating country!
Just a couple of suggestions for you. Whatever you decide, have a great trip!

Since your time is February/March, I would look to the Southern Hemisphere. Summer ending and fall starting might be a great time to be there. Australia and New Zealand are wonderful, but travel time to and from is extensive. I’ve not traveled to South America but often think about the possibilities.

marybeth,
Another thought...we spent 10 days in Chile (Santiago, Easter Island, Punta Arenas and the Straits of Magellan). With another week we could have visited the Atacama Desert and Valparaiso, plus a day trip higher up in the Andes, and perhaps a second wineries daytrip.
We really liked Chile and the Chileans. Our Straits of Magellan part involved a three night cruise on a small (about 150 passengers) scientifically oriented ship to visit islands around the tip of South America. What a thrill! It wasn't Antarctica, but still wonderful! Easter Island and the moai are memorable! I recommend Chile to anyone. Great contrasts within the country to enjoy. I made our own arrangements because I think tours aren't necessary there, except for some day tours (to wineries) and the cruise. Santiago itself is easy to explore, as I have heard Valparaiso is.
So may places and choices!

Greece is wonderful; we've been several times. Morocco also looks great for a winter trip, though we have not been yet.

We've taken 3 cruises of the Eastern Med over the years--each going to different places.

We do want to see more of Croatia, Montenegro and Northern Greece (inland). That would be great places to see by see or land in early Spring.

I would shy away from any location in Europe with a beautiful coast line. Save if for weather you can enjoy it. I guess in Europe I would begin googling for a location that has some sort of festival or event going on. And a place that has hard winters because they have adapted to the winter as opposed to surviving it. You can find lists like this for most of the larger cities: https://festivalbudapest.com/budapest-festivals-february and https://festivalbudapest.com/budapest-festivals-in-march

Hi marybeth, last February 2023 we did a three week trip to Antarctica and Patagonia (Argentina and Chile). It was wonderful, something you may want to consider.

We did New Zealand and Australia in March 2020. Beautiful countries, nice climate but not the best timing…

You could choose Berlin including March 5-7 to visit large tourist fair ITB 2024 which will offer you direct information about nearly all travel destinations worldwide.

Hi Marybeth- February is a bit early for Japan, as it will be cold. If your trip was a little later you might be hitting cherry blossom season, though. February/ March can be nice for SE Asia (but some locations will have terrible air quality then, too). It's a bit early for Jordan (as someone suggested) but if you have it for the last part of your trip, you should get pleasant weather.

Argentina and Chile with a cruise around Cape Horn is wonderful. Also, spend some days before in Buenos Aires and after in Santiago.

Japan is great, but not the best time of the year.

Another option is Australia, it is fantastic.

My suggestion is Costa Rica. We spent two weeks there in Jan/Feb 2022. The weather was perfect and we really enjoyed the wildlife and scenery.
