London, Amsterdam, Murren, Venice in June

Hello,

My husband and I are headed to Europe in early June. We are spending 3 nights in London, 2 in Amsterdam, 4 in Murren, and 3 in Venice.

We are flying from London to Amsterdam and from Amsterdam to Zurich, then taking a train for the majority of the rest of the trip except for a car rental in northern Italy when traveling from Milan to Venice.

We are staying in the Cherry Court Hotel in London, Ibis central in Amsterdam, Hotel Blumental in Murren, and Corte de Campana B&B in Venice.

A couple of questions....

Is Lucerne worth stoping off on our train ride from Zurich to Murren for a few hours?

On our drive from Milan to Venice would you recommend any small towns in particular to visit?

While in Murren what restruants or activities do you most recommend (surrounding towns as well). I am probably most excited for the Alps which is why we have it an extra day but can’t seem to narrow down what to do there. (We did purchase a 4 day Swiss travel pass.)

While in Venice do you recommend visiting another island and if so which one?

Finally if you have stayed in the hotels I mentioned what was your experience?

Thank you!

Amber

Tam’s Chinese restaurant in Murren is excellent. Expect $100USD per meal for family of 4 in Murren. Rick’s suggestion of buying a picnic at the in-town Coop grocery store is a good one.

Luzern is worth a stop and since you will already have your Swiss Travel Pass you should lock your bag up in train station at Luzern and take the boat ride from Lake Luzern to Vitznau which is where you can catch the train up to Mount Rigi. Otherwise you will have to back track.

From Milan to Venice there is Verona, Vicenza and Padua to visit.

The ride to the top of the Schilthorn from Murren is covered with the Swiss Travel Pass. You can go up to Wengen from Lauterbrunnen.

The best way to narrow down is to look at videos. You tube has a lot.
That helped me. You have to look at what is covered with the pass as some lifts and mountain railways are not covered but you get 50% off.

I used the grocery store for dinner and just ate the hotel breakfast.

I was just wondering why you were renting a car from Milan to Venice. That route is well served by train and a car is not helpful in Venice.

Thank you to everyone for your help!

We are renting a car from Milan to Venice just so we could take our time, go at our own pace, and stop at several cities along the way. Also my husband loves to drive so we thought this would be a nice area to explore. We definitely will be getting rid of the car the moment we get to Venice.

I assume you have purchased your flights and your Swiss pass, so no changes are possible regarding those. Too bad you didn’t ask for advice before doing anything irrevocable. Here’s my analysis and advice, given what you have. Keep in mind that the number of nights minus one equals the number of days available for sightseeing. Therefore, you have just 2 (jet-lagged) days for London, and 1, possibly 1.5 days for Amsterdam. You will be spending an inordinate amount of time getting to and in airports and train stations, as well as in vehicles.
All that being the case, I advise that you not even consider another island in the Venetian lagoon. I’d also scrap the idea of a car from Milan to Venice and that of stopping anywhere between the two cities. Those are the only places I can see where you have any possibility for slowing down and actually enjoying the places on your itinerary.
