We plan to be in Dublin in July and will use public transportation to get around. We would prefer to stay in a bed and breakfast, but it appears that there are not alot of these in the center of town. Is it better to stay in the center of town for sightseeing purposes and going to pubs or is transportation easy from the B&B's, which appear to be further away? (perhaps I am wrong and there are lots of B&B's in town). Sara
You could try lodging at Trinity College which is the most central location in Dublin. They offer rooms for tourists during the summer which include a more than ample continental breakfast in the price. If you prefer a hot breakfast, there is a small charge.
Very easy to get to Trinity using public transportation from the airport, you will rarely need to take a bus to get to most major sites as a lot is within walking distance of Trinity (including pubs).
There are a number of B&Bs in the city - many located near Merrion Square which is a nice part of the city. If you want to stay further out, you can stay in Dun Laoghaire or Howth which are fairly easy train rides into Dublin.
We stayed at Kilronan House, which is south of St. Stephen's Green, and a 15 minute walk from Trinity College and the pubs of Temple Bar.
If you do stay outside of the city, it would be cheaper, but you would need to take the train. Malahide is a very nice area to stay as well.
One other option is guesthouses. I stayed at the Glen Guesthouse on Gardiner St, just a couple of blocks from O'Connell St. There are a number of hostels and guesthouses on that street, just behind the Custom House.) The Trinity College/Temple Bar area is just across the bridge. Hot breakfast was included, and they have great showers.
