Living in Italy for the summer

I am currently doing an Internship for the summer in Italy. I would love to be able to travel to different locations around Italy and Europe throughout the summer. However I only have the weekends (3 days) to travel. What cities, regions or countries should I make sure I visit?

I hope you are being paid. My son spent a semester in Madrid and was very excited when the school arranged an internship with the leading architectural firm in the city. (He was an architectural engineer.) Then he learned that he would not be paid because he did not have a work permit. O'well, it was a great experience.

That's great. Where in Italy is the internship?

Emily,

The cool thing is that since you have the whole summer, if you visit a place for a weekend and find that 3 days isn't enough, you can always go back on another weekend. With the high-speed trains and/or taking overnight trains, you can fit a lot in while you are there. If it were me, I would try to get to Paris, the Alsace region, Burgundy region, Vienna, Berlin, the Swiss Oberland, Prague and Budapest.

I got interrupted as I was replying before (darn job interferring with much more interesting things). I was going to go on to say that it all depends on your interests. I included a lot of cities, but maybe you want to spend more time in the countryside. Or, perhaps you might want to do things related to your internship. For example, if it is an internship in design, maybe there will be a trade show that is relevant. If you have a hobby, consider trying to connect with Europeans who have the same interests. Can you imagine how cool it would be to go to a home and garden show (if you are into remodeling or gardening) in Europe? Do you like horses? If so, how about looking up a horse show. As others on here have seen me post before, I show dogs. One of the things I would DEFINITELY do if I were in Europe as long as you are going to be is to hit dog shows in several different countries. People are always thrilled to meet someone from the US who is into the same thing they are.

Emily,, you can go anywhere ,, lucky you. Depending on where you are of course, I;ll assume Rome.. so from Rome to Paris, less then 2 hours by plane, if you fly into Charles De Gaulle airport it is 30 minutes and less then 10 euros to city center.. You can leave after work on Thursday on a late flight and enjoy three days in Paris!! The hard part will be finding flight times that work for you. Check out Vueling. Make sure airports used are conveneinent for using public transport. Have fun.
