Lights out for Paris

Front page article in the WSJ today about energy saving in Europe this winter, focusing mainly on Paris. The city plans to be shutting off the lights on buildings, monuments, museums, Eiffel Tower at 10 or 11 PM. Stores on the Champs are being encouraged to do so as well. Buildings also being told to cut back on the heat.

The deputy mayor said this shouldn't be a problem, that people will come anyway and they aren't mosquitos.

"Beginning on Sept. 21, the Eiffel Tower, which is usually illuminated
in golden hues within less than 10 minutes of nightfall and has an
hourly 5-minute show of dazzling sparkles until 1 a.m., will have its
lights turned off beginning at 11:45 p.m., when visiting time has
ended. The nightly golden illumination makes up about 4% of the
monument's annual energy expenses, according to its website."

Another article say the Louvre will go dark at 11 instead of 1am.
Doesn't sound like "Lights out for Paris", sounds like "Lights out for bedtime".

Depending on how severe winter is and how fast the energy stockpiles are being used up, by January, all that might be seen are the red aircraft warning lights.

1 Or something else could happen and the lights stay on later
2 Or ..................
3 Or ..................
4 But for now they go off at bed time......
5 God willing, people are amazingly creative and resilient and the world gets through the winter.
6 I will deal with the bad news, when it actually comes.

We seldom go to Europe except in Spring and Fall--cooler times of the year.

The best view of the Eiffel Tower is riding the Paris Metro around to the Trocodero Station. Come up the escalator and that huge tower is down the hill and across the river. If you go at sunset, the strobes start going off and the sight is absolutely incredible.

As long as they don't replace the light in your room with candles and the restaurants only offer cold dishes, everything is fine.
There's nothing worse than eating a cold boeuf bourguignon in the dark

Seventy percent of France's energy is nuclear. Unfortunately, half of the reactors are offline right now for technical reasons, maintenance, or wear. The other 30% is affected by the war, but only somewhat. So lights out two hours earlier.

Even better: ride the metro between Passy & Bir Hakeim on line 6, and look left (north). Or vice-versa, looking right.

For some reason this thread has me thinking about the Academy Award-winning classic, "Bedtime For Bonzo."

That's a lot to remember!
