light wide body carry on 22x18x10?

Hello, I am travelling to Europe this spring on an airline that allows a carry on of 22 x 18 x 10, but maximum of 26 pounds. I would like a rolling carry on that is wider than the US limit to take advantage of the larger limit, but preferably lightweight so I do not go over the weight limit with the larger size. I see lots of choices at least 16 inches wide (Aerolite seems ideal) on the UK version of Amazon, but none that ship to the US. There is a Pathfinder that is 20 x 16 x 9 but in cubic inches that is not much bigger than 22 x 14 x 9, and it weighs 9 pounds. The only other US rolling wide body carry ons I can find are very expensive (Briggs and Riley, Tumi, etc.) and I am thinking $200 or less. Ideally I would like 2 wheels instead of 4 and to have the expandable zipper in between the wheels and front legs so the bag doesn't tip, but mainly I am looking for the larger size. Has anyone found such a bag for sale in the US? Thank you.

As my mother used to say, good ain't cheap and cheap ain't good. This is very true with spinners, if that is what you are looking for, as those wheels take a beating. I splurged for the Briggs&Riley wide bodied international spinner and it is a winner. Consider spending the extra money now, and you'll have this bag forever.

Do you plan to take any trips after the one you are referring to or will this be your only travel ever? If you plan more trips, will they only be on this airline? It might be better to get a bag that fits the majority of airlines rather than just for one trip.. And....larger bags will weigh more......and......it sounds like you want to take more which might take you over the carry on limit.

The reason you don't see many international sized carry ons in the U.S. is because there is little market for it. Road Warriors who travel for business internationally can usually afford the better cases--like Tumi and Briggs & Riley-- and want a bag that will last. So the international models are sold in the U.S. Less expensive luggage just doesn't have the market here.

If you want to find a bag that will fit your needs, I suggest going to ebags.com and using the filters for International carry ons.

One tip that many of us follow is not to bring the maximum amount you are allowed but to pack smarter and bring just what you need.

Though on this trip the airline might allow a bag of that size, plan for the future. If you go on a trip on a different carrier in the future, this bag might be too large. Checking for airfares might show a large savings on a carrier that won’t accept that carry on. Buy smaller, pack lighter!

In my opinion, the airlines' required weight and measurements change too often to buy a carry on for life. If you always check, that is an entirely different story. If you pack those measurements, I can't imagine how you will stay under the weight limitation. I suggest you do a practice pack of everything you believe you want to take with you in your suitcase and weigh it. Then look at the weight of the bag(s) you would like to purchase so you will can pack under 26 lbs. However, if the weight is OK, I think you will find that you can fit it all in an international carryon. Weight is really the issue. I am checking my carryon generally these days. My preferred carryon for checking is a Hartman and weighs 9 lbs. If I pack my usually lightness, I will just be under 26 lbs...but that is in my 20" X 14" X 9" bag (including wheels) and it is not stuffed full...so do a packing test run before shopping for a new bag. IMO

This is my current carry-on:

Doesn't quite meet those specs, but close. Unless you're flying easyJet or RyanAIr or one of the "budget" European airlines, I doubt you'll have a problem - I never have on several inter-Europe flights.

Note that this bag isn't a "spinner" (four wheels) - because it has only two wheels, it has more room. All of the "spinners" I saw had less capacity due to the extra wheels.

My carry-on. I love this! Sturdy wheels, steady, well made, guaranteed for life (no expiration date of guarantee), and is under your budget by $21!

I search (Amazon normally) for the dimensions I'm looking for. Try to see if that works. There are so many bags available, you might find something. Another option is to search Amazon under "airline's name" carry on. That might work.

Personally, I'm down to a small shoulder bag and 12 lbs. seems too heavy to me. With the lighter weight allowance, I'd really want two or no wheels. Wheels can really eat up your allowance. Hopefully you can find something with two wheels and a handle that won't extend the dimensions too much.

Also, keep some weight allowance open. Loads always expand en route and you might want to bring a few things home. Can you check for free on the way home or is it additional? I'm most worried about carry on during the trip over. I want to get out of the airport and on my way as quickly as possible. On the way home, it's not as big of deal (also not as big of deal if the bag is lost for a day or two).

Try Sierra Trading Post and related sites like Left Lane Sports and The Clymb. You're starting to get into the time of year where some big names like Briggs & Riley, Eagle Creek, etc. send their discontinued models and colors to those kind of discount merchant web sites and sometimes you can get lucky and find something with the right specs for 40% or more off original MSRP.

Getting an 18 inch wide bag down an airplane aisle may be a challenge.

When I was shopping for a bag a few years ago, I looked at the allowable sizes at several airlines ( US). Cannot recall seeing any that allowed 18".

You sure you want to invest $200 for what could be a one time use?

Thanks to all! I have tried to reply several times over the past few days, but none are showing, so here's hoping this shows.... I would probably travel overseas 6-8 more times over the years, maybe every other year. I do not travel for business. This is "Wow" airlines that allows the 22 x 18 x 10. I do usually fly out of my local airport on a domestic flight first, but in this case am driving to a larger airport that this airline serves directly. Like a poster above, I do prefer to stick to carry on, primarily so I know that what I need will arrive with me, and don't mind checking on the way back, but for health reasons need to take a couple of extra items that make the 22 x 14 x 9 impractical for me. I do think 22 x 16 x 10 would work ( 16 vs. 18). Have found a 22 x 16 x 10 without wheels (London Fog weekender) but I think I do need the wheels. Still looking!

I know you say you need a bag with wheels. Last time I took a trip, I went to Italy. I did not check in any luggage. I had a 24 inch long duffle bag with both a handle and a shoulder strap. It cost under $40.00. I had also considered buying a bag shapped like the duffle bag but with straps like on a backpack. I did not pack my bag all the way full. I was able to stuff it into the overhead storage compartment, on all my flights. I also had a small backpack, which is too poorly constructed, but my mother gave me it for free; it came with her subscription to the sierra club. If you can help it, avoid wheeled luggage. While you are fumbling around to take money out to pay for public transportation after you get off the airplane, when you take your hands off your wheeled luggage, somebody could steal your luggage.

In general, I don’t like wheeled luggage. I prefer to keep both my hands free when possible. The wheels increase the weight of the luggage; I feel that if I can’t cary the weight of my stuff without th help of wheeles, I am carrying too much.

Thanks to all who replied! An update for those who may have the same question: Although I could not find any US vendor who carried what I was looking for (a 56cm x 45cm x 25cm wheeled carry on), nor any UK vendor on amazon.co.uk who would ship what I was looking for to the US, I was able to purchase on ebay.co.uk for shipment to US.

Manufacturer "5 cities" make a 56x45x25 lightweight bag that is essentially a relatively unstructured duffle-type bag with a handle and 2 wheels, 4.3 pounds, $28 + $18 for overseas shipping for one, discounts on multiple bags. The 5 cities wheeled bag is not especially well rated primarily because there is no structure so it does not stand up on its own, but if you buy it knowing you will have to set it down flat when you stop, it would likely be fine for one trip. There is also a lightweight Aerolite, a more traditionally structured 2-wheeled suitcase, better ratings, 5.1 pounds, $46 + $25 shipping for one, also with discounts on multiple bags. (I chose the Aerolite.)
