I have a Med cruise booked for next month and now I am worried about the conflict in Libya. Do you think they will affect the cruises in the Med?
Is Tripoli one of the ports of call?
No, Tripoli is not one of the ports of call. The cruise is in the Med Sea and so is Libya. Sicily and Italy are very close to Libya so that is my concern with the Nato ships being in the Med, I was not sure if they would cancel the cruise ships in that area. Look at a map.
Why ??? Where you going to Libya? Check with the cruise line to see if they are altering their route. The Med is big place so unless you were going to one of the north African ports, I wouldn't think anything would change.
Oh Good to know Frank. Our cruise starts in Rome and ends in Venice. We go to Taromina in Sicily and Corfu, Greece. The news said the conflict was in the Med so Sicily does not look that far from Libya. I have been planning this trip for over a year and am looking forward to it.
I am also leaving on a cruise mid April from Barcelona to Venice with extra time before in Paris. I am not worried about the conflict as it is really concentrated on that one country. If I was cruising to Libya I would be concerned (not that I think I ever would) Imagine the inpact on economies that this would have if everyone just canceled their cruises in Europe. I think if anything Europe will be very welcoming to us tourists this year.
The conflict is land-based, and there is a fleet of NATO ships based off the coast. I wouldn't worry... unless the Barbary pirates return from the pages of history!
Thanks everyone for your replies. It makes me feel better knowing that is should not affect our cruise. Only 30 more days till we depart for Rome!
A friend just had a cruise last week in the Med, mostly the western part. Their Morocco port was cancelled, so they spent an extra day in Canary Islands. Another friend had their Egypt port cancelled the week prior, they spent an extra day 'at sea'.
Darla....to put it in perspective....the closest you'll be to Libya will be about 350 miles. In between your cruise ship and Libya will be battle groups, including aircraft carriers, from the U.S., the U.K. and France, not to mention fighter jets flying overhead from European bases. You'll be safer in April than you would have been 6 months ago. Have a great time.
Thanks Frank, my Grand Father, Father and Husband are all ex military. A few years ago my family and I were on a Mexican cruise and the Air Force was flying over our ship. It was an unbelievable sound and sight. My husband told me that that is the sound of Freedom!
Darla, As the others have said, you shouldn't have any problems whatsoever with your cruise, especially as you won't be that close to Libya. The current regime in Libya is much more preoccupied with the prospect of a 1000-lb cylindrical object dropping down the chimney (which occurred in Moammar's Palace last night), so I doubt they have time to be concerned with attacking cruise ships. I assume your ship won't be cruising along the coast of Somalia? Happy travels!
If for some reason there was danger, the cruise line will re-route you. I was on a Carribbean cruise years ago when there was unrest in Haiti. They sent us to another island for that day instead.
