I'm planning on going to the spas in Germany, and wondered if I can leave my legs unshaven, or if it is customary for women to have shaved legs?
Why oh why do we Americans get so worked up about textile frei in German spas?
I thought about it a lot and decided - it's because they're naked! LOL
When I lived there as a student women in Germany and Austria did not shave their legs (even when wearing nylons). They were, however, mostly blondes so it wasn't that noticeable. In the years since things may have changed.
My German SIL does not shave,, she tried to take up the habit when she moved here to Canada,, just to be like everyone else here,, but hated it, and stopped. I seriously doubt anyone will care if you shave or not in Germany. I am sure some ladies do,, but I am equally sure many don't .. so do what you please.
Yes, most German women shave their legs and underarms. Unless they are into an alternative culture, back to the land kind of thing. If you don't feel like shaving though, it is ok and no one will give you a second glance. Younger women especially will always shave.
I've been in three different German spas, and all were what they call "Textile frei". It's doubtful that anyone will look at your legs.
Hello all,
Thank you for your replies. Maybe I'll shave one leg and leave the other alone. :-)
Happy traveling.
How about shaving in the old Stars and Stripes? That way they'll know you're and American?? Whole new twist to looking like a tourist.
