Least Expensive Time of Year to Travel to Rome from USA?

I'm planning on visiting Rome again next year and would like to know the least expensive times of year to travel. I'm aware of last minute offers, etc. but I'm a Senior Traveler and need to make plans in advance. Enjoyed your show on TV.

Rome was cheap for us in mid August. It was super hot and we had our choice of hotels. Prices were very flexible too.

Down side: It can be VERY hot.

I was in Italy this past February. Jan-Feb seemed to be the low season for hotels in most of the country - in Venice is was super-high season because of Carnevale (the reason I went in February).

The weather was mostly cold and rainy, except for my 6 days in Rome, which were mild (no coat) to quite warm (sandals, sun hat, and gelato) and sunny. But in the cold and rainy north, there were more people eating gelato and more shops selling it, than in Rome.

Because of the popularity of Venice, I had to book a room more than 6 months in advance, but for the rest, I had no trouble getting anything I wanted 4-6 weeks ahead. On the other hand, many small establishments (with the best value for money) are closed in February. I suspect March prices are about the same and the weather may be better, as long as Easter isn't too close to your travel dates.

I just got tickets for Italy leaving on thanksgiving Nov 25 and coming back on Dec 11. I fly into Milan and out of Venice for $683. I could have flown into Milan and out of Rome for $758 but opted for the cheaper ticket. If I left one week earlier, ticket prices for the same flights were $200-300 more expensive. I am finding that rooms in Rome being significantly cheaper than Rick Steves states in his guide books, for this time as well.
