layovers in amsterdam

I have flights with layovers in Amsterdam. 5 hours during the day - is that long enough to leave the airport, see anything and get back thru customs, etc. - or can I even leave the airport? Then 8 hours overnight coming back - again - can I leave? How about wandering the red light district? Or getting some sleep?

You are allowed to leave the airport, go into the city and return. Assuming you already will have your boarding pass for the connecting flight, 5 hours is enough time for a quick visit. There are lockers in the terminal area of the airport. When you deboard your plane from the US, follow the signs for the lockers instead of baggage reclaim/immigration. After your bags are in the lockers, then proceed to immigration. Don't use the lockers at Centraal Station. There are pubs and Coffee shops open all night in the RLD, but after 1am especially during the week, it can get kind of "doggy" there are a lot of desperate drug addicts around.

5 hours is enough. See to have a boardingpass for the connecting flight. Take the luggagelockers in the airport (Schiphol is the name). In the main hall of the airport is a trainstation and ticketbox. Trains depart 5 x per hour, ride to Amsterdam Central Station is 20 min. cost is Euro 6,20 (US$ 8.45)RLD is approx. 15 min walk from Central Station. If in daytime another possibility is a canalride by boat. Takes one hour 15 minutes, cost 9 Euro (US$ 12.25). Boats depart and arrive in front of Central Station. Good luck and fun, Dolph
