We have a cruise on the Rhine, ending on October 16th in Basel, Switzerland and have about 5 days after, to spend time in either Switzerland or the Lake country of Italy. We could fly home from Zurich or Geneva, or Milan if we go that route.
Are facilities open that time of year? Crowds? I'm thinking trains, but can rent a car if needed.
Any thoughts? Thanks
Brad
I was in Switzerland later than that and it was perfect for me—quiet in Murren evenings but we were able to do all we wanted to do. On lake Geneva, the vineyards absolutely sparkled in that early fall sun so that would be my choice, but you could squeeze in two stops if you prefer.
We also did a mid to late Swiss trip. Thought it was perfect. Our favorite stay was in Wengen. Very quiet early mornings and after 4pm. We felt like it was there just for us! We did have dinners in hotel restaurants. Loved our 4 night stay after staying in St. Moritz, Zermatt and the Luzern after Wengen. We took the trains and the last night in Luzern was quick and easy to get to Zurich airport.
October is the month when gondolas have their scheduled maintenance; and winds can be high thus closing the lifts. I would try to see Switzerland prior to your cruise rather than after. J
thanks for the responses. Keep them coming!
I’d simply look up open and closing times of anything you’re interested in doing, seeing. We loved mid October and enjoyed our stay in Wengen. Just a note, we’ve done 9 trips in October to the Austrian, Bavarian alps and the Dolomites. There’s enough open (lifts) and the crowds are low.
