late afternoon tour of St Peters

Anyone wait until cruise ship folks leave town to visit the Basilica?? I was thinking after 4pm or 5 would be a good idea.I would rather have less time than to be crammed. Will be there end of Sept Sun -Tues. Any ideas? thanks

It does quiet down. In fact, Rick Steves has recommended a late afternoon visit, perhaps the last hours before closing when the light is soft. I have also found early AM, at opening, relatively peaceful.
