last minute easter weekend trip from Cologne - help please!

Hi all:

My husband is stuck in Germany (a month now...) for work and has a 4 day weekend this weekend for easter... my earlier plan of last minute trip to Iceland with the kids to meet him is off because I came to my senses... if not kids, I would be on it, but it was just too hard...sigh.

Anyway, he has time and I need to plan him a little last minute getaway! Leaving this Friday AM and returning to cologne some time Monday... he can fly, train, or rent a car.... Price isn't too much of an issue, since I think his company will end up paying for it. He has had a really stressful month, and probably at least a week or two to go before he can come home. He has cold weather clothes with him, no shorts or anything... He likes old cities, beer, collecting those coins you can get from sights, walking around... nothing too stressful since he also needs a little break.

Ideas?? Throw them out! I told him I would put a few ideas together for him while he currently is sleeping in Germany! We have been to most of the biggies... also something maybe that isn't totally shut down for Easter...

Thinking Budapest? He has wanted to go to Mont St. Michael... southern spain (catch tail end of semana santa but might be stressful with crowds....).... where else? How fun, I just wish I were going!!!! :)

Thanks!
Kim

How about just a short trip to the Rhine or Mosel? Either are an easy weekend trip from Koln. You could also opt for some Romantic Road sites (Wurzburg, Dinklesbuhl, Nordlingen, Rothenburg).

If you have a car, you won't need much planning. If not, trains are incredibly easy in Germany. Use tripadvisor to find places to stay.

Belgium? Easy train ride from Cologne.

Bruges would be good for an old city with good beer - he could also do a brewery tour of De Halve Maan. Also, he could rent a bike and enjoy riding around and maybe out to Damme for lunch and to poke around.

I agree about Belgium, but 4 days in Brugge is too many. I would base in Antwerp and daytrip to Brugge. Note that this is still a Catholic country. You don't indicate if you are willing to fly on short notice. Berlin is more suitable for a holiday weekend, perhaps. Would you join rhe crowds of families strolling in Antwerp's Rivierenhof park, or view the holiday-proof Art Nouveau EXTERIORS of Antwerp's Cogels Osy Lei?

Thanks all!

Great minds, I was thinking Belgium too after I sat down and thought a bit! He is going to Bruges! Low logistics...

I booked him a train there Friday and home Monday... it has all of the best things, beer, cute city, canals, a great looking running path... I am so jealous! I think I snagged maybe one of the last hotel rooms in Bruges!

I need to talk to him, and see if he wants the Brewery tour, plus maybe a day trip to Antwerp. I am so jealous I might explode.

Thanks so much! Good input!
