Laptop through airport security

Does anyone have any recent experience with taking a laptop through airport security?

I recently bought a new laptop so need a new sleeve, but I’m having a hard time finding one that will fit the device and doesn’t have a metal closure (zipper, snaps, magnets). I’ve always left my laptop in its sleeve when going through security--including at European airports--and did so as recently as last May. I thought the reason I was allowed to do so was because the sleeve had no metal closures, but I can’t find anything on TSA's website re if/when and why a laptop can remain in its sleeve. The only laptop rule I find is that it must be removed from your carry-on and placed by itself in the bin, which has been standard practice for years.

Did I make up the whole metal closure thing? Did TSA change the rules recently?

I am on TSA. My laptop stays in my camera bag. It all went thru the screening device no problem. I've never heard anything about metal closures being off limit.

There is no general laptop rule for all airports. The rules for hand luggage depend on the type of luggage scanners in use at the airport. At Amsterdam Schiphol Airport you can leave everything, including liquids and electronics, inside your bag. You don’t need to take out your laptop from your bag, let alone take it out of its sleeve.

Went through SEA on Tuesday, check point 5. Everything stayed in the bag. Comment made by the TSA agent is that not all check points have the scanners to permit this at SEA.
We had only iPads , but did not se anyone taking anything out of their bag.

The rules are changing all over the place mostly as a result of new scanner technology. The major airports in the UK were due to have the new scanners up and running earlier this year but there has been a delay, consequently when I flew from Heathrow last week I still had to have my liquid restriction and placed in a clear bag, tablet out of my bag but still in its case, belt removed etc. Lisbon airport was the same but without the requirement to remove a belt. Other airports no longer have a liquid limit, others no longer require you to remove laptops and tablets. It's difficult to keep track of the changes and the rules for specific airports.

I went through Heathrow yesterday. Old scanners.

Laptops, tablets, kindles had to be removed from the bags. Nothing about taking them out of their sleeves. They just want a clear look at it.

Metal closures is something in your dreams. (LOL)

Frank, your experience at Heathrow yesterday was different than mine this morning. I had to remove my laptop from the sleeve, which was a very simple sleeve.

Mardee, what I've learned at Heathrow is that every terminal, every line, every security agent is different.

I don't travel with a laptop but I observed what others did. The same with toiletries. No yelling about using the "Heathrow" bag.

This was Fast Track at T2.

As I was waiting there was a security agent directing people to different lines. I asked him: "Old scanner or new scanner?" He smiled surprised at the question and said "Old scanner, sorry."

That's interesting, Frank, because they were really enforcing the zip lock bag thing this morning. I had to dump my liquids in the bag. That said, there was a lot of chaos going on because of the Paris strikes and so many flights were cancelled (including mine to MPS). They all seemed a little stressed. In fact, they made me remove my sweater vest, which looks NOTHING like outerwear.

Mardee....was that T5?

The only negative experiences I've had have been at T5.

Back to the original question -

In the US, if you have TSA Pre-Check, you do not need to remove laptops from your carry-on/backpack/tote whether in a sleeve or not. If you have Pre-Check, it is indicated on your boarding pass.

Foreign airports, in my experience, vary. Politely ask or monitor what others are doing.

I've flown with m laptop umpteen times, domestically and internationally. Even during strict times when I had to remove it from my carryon bag, I have never had to remove it from the sleeve, and that had a metal zipper.

Thanks, everyone. Very helpful. I really must have dreamed up the "no metal" restriction! :D
