Lake Como to Vienna

My wife and I are planning a trip for a wedding in early October, and we need to end in Vienna. I wanted to (and posted about) starting the trip in Paris, but it seems that is way far away. This was my new thought process:

Something like -

Land in Milan >> Lake Como 3nights >> Bernina Express to St Moritz 3nights >> continue on to Chur >> Chur to Innsbruck 3nights >> Direct train here to Vienna

Does this make sense? It will be early October. My wife likes staying in places at least 3 nights, and we are trying to avoid super long train rides (7+ hours).

Originally I thought we could start in Geneva, but pivoted to Lake Como. Open to suggestions!

From st. Moritz you do not need to go to Chur on your way to Austria. You could for example also go via Zernez and the Swiss National Park to Meran, and the onwards to Innsbruck for example.

This is not a an area that I know a dang thing about, but the trip sounded beautiful so I thought I would look at it and keep notes for the future for me.

First, you have to get from Como to Tirano to start the Bernina Express, is that correct? Thats a couple of hours by car or bus. It’s a special trip, I wouldn’t take a bus. You might find better transfers (let me know) but DayTrip will do it for a small fortune, and I could have a leisurely morning and still catch the 13:17 train. But If I didn’t mind arriving in Saint Moritz right at sunset, I could have DayTrip make a stop or two and make a sightseeing trip out of it and still catch the 16:06 train. The choices are Varenna, Abbazia di Piona, Basilica of San Pietro and San Paolo of Agliate, Lecco, Orrido di Bellano and Corenno Pinio. (I am thinking this correctly?)

3 Nights in St. Moritz, yes.

Train up to Chur. Looks like a beautiful trip and the train runs every hour or so. No crazy early departure necessary and you could still arrive early enough for a nice lunch and a look around (if the train station has luggage lockers). Then it gets a bit more bothersome with transfers involved to reach Innsbruck? I am curious to see how you solve all of this.

3 nights in Innsbruck, yes.

Direct train to Vienna. Sure.

I wouldn't take the bus either, but I would also not travel by car. The easiest way to get to Tirano from lake Como is by train, there are trains running to Tirano along the eastern shore. I'm not sure how it might look like in October, but the roads along the lake can be very crowded so car travel can be slow. If you want a fun trip, use the ferries on the lake to get as far north as possible and then continue by train.

Chur to Innsbruck is an easy trip, takes three hours with one change.
