Lads holiday for 2 19 year old lads from UK

Hi everyone,

I hope you all had a good christmas.

I have asked previously about lads holidays, however I feel I have rounded it down more.

Last year, me and one of my mates went to Split (Croatia) in summer and it had everything we wanted at the time (nice town, history, viewpoints, day trips and good nightlife).

I’m trying to come up with some ideas for next year’s summer holiday with the same friend and I’m now struggling to find somewhere new that fits a similar criteria. To put it simply, these are the things I would like:
- A town with things to do and see within
- Options for day trips to other places/for activities
- On the coast in Europe
- Have a young, decent nightlife
- Feel safe within the place

I’d looked at Tenerife, algarve, Marbella, Mykonos.

Any advise on which of these/other suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Previously I would prefer one of the classier places, but I feel I am willing to slightly sacrifice this if it means better nightlife!

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Donostia/San Sebastian fit the bill.

Have you thought about Ibiza? It's over 20 years since I've been, but from what I see on social media it's still got some of that spirit left if you look for it.

San Antonio is full on party central. Very commercialised and some places are ridiculously expensive to get in and buy a drink these days. It's an experience still though. If you like clubs, there's not many places on the same scale globally if you can afford to splurge for a night or two.

I liked to stay in Ibiza Town when I got to know the island a bit better. It's a bit classier and quieter, but you'd have to do you own research as I'm a bit out of date. It was easy just to turn up and get an apartment or hotel on the spot years ago; you could probably do the same now we've got booking.com these days. Tons of places to stay at reasonable prices in San Antonio and Ibiza Town.

Renting a car, at least for a day or two, is a good idea. The highways are good and there's a ton of good driving on quiet backroads. Up in the north of the island is more chill, more hippy-ish and a car lets you get up there easily.

Thanks for the replies.

I had looked at the Balearics. Not too sure why I haven’t really considered it though. Ibiza would be cool if Ibiza town has enough going on/if it’s not too far to get to San Antonio from there.

San Sebastián has been one that I liked the look of, but not sure about the nightlife - is it a young audience?

You'll see if you do a bit of research that Ibiza Town is quite gay friendly. It's not what it's all about, but it's something to bear in mind. Some of the best times I've had in Ibiza were in tiny gay bars and clubs, much more a Spanish and Italian crowd. Packed and sweaty, but I liked the proper house music from New York and Chicago they were playing and the scene in Ibiza Town was an antidote to the English-dominated chart-rave in the big clubs in San Antonio. The old town still has a bit more Catalan charm than San Antonio.

Buses are regular between Ibiza Town and San Antonio, possibly all night? You'd need to check that. San Antonio's alright to stay if you want to be more in amongst it on a first visit. Loads of places to stay, especially if you're not all that fussy. Lots of other English people your age, but that may or may not be a good thing in your book. There's other places in Europe with good nightlife, but Ibiza just has that certain magic that other places don't have.

It sounds to me that San Antonio would suit me better if anywhere in Ibiza. I’ll definitely look into that further.

In regard to other places, where else would you suggest? Some places I can also research alongside Ibiza?

Ibiza, Barcelona and Amsterdam / Leiden are the places in continental Europe I've been to (a lot) that I can recommend and talk about from personal experience and keeping up with online.

I had a good time at Sonar Festival and surrounding events almost every year right through the 2000's in Barcelona. That happens in June every year. Best electronic music festival in Europe (maybe?) and there's lots going on "off-Sonar" even if you don't have festival tickets for the whole weekend.

Torremolinos would fit the bill. Other destinations that should work include Cannes, Dubrovnik, Albanian coast (probably the cheapest). But I'd also suggest you consider Copenhagen. Danish girls are very attractive.

I haven't considered possible destinations to suggest, but one thought that occurred to me is that you might want to avoid places that have been inundated with tourists in the last few years (especially in summer). This article will provide some examples of problem areas - https://www.forbes.com/sites/ceciliarodriguez/2023/07/31/tourists-go-home-fed-up-with-over-tourism-european-hotspots-impose-bans-fines-taxes-and-traps/ .

You could have a look at Poland or other countries in that part of Europe, as there's a lot of history in that area. The Scandianavian countries are another possibility although they will likely be a bit more expensive to travel in.

Good luck with your planning!

I’ve also seen a lot of good things about Stockholm.

Perhaps I could do one of the places mentioned in June/July, and Stockholm in September?
