Some time ago a question came up about whether ladies' leggings were being worn in Europe. Someone reported that they were worn in Ireland, I think it was, and several ladies wanted to know if they were the fashion on the continent as well. I'm not sure if the question was ever answered. I just wanted to report that here in Germany I have seen women wearing black leggings with calf-high boots and above-the-knee sweater dresses and skirts. I have also seen some displayed this way in shop windows. It's not an overwhelming fashion; there are plenty of slacks outfits as well. But if you wanted to pack leggings for your fall or winter trip, I think you would fit in.
DD, thanks for that tip. I saw a lot last winter in Paris and London.
Best to dress for comfort rather than fashion. I would wear leggings if needed in cold weather.
D.D.:
Thank you so much for the fashion update! I (and perhaps others) did indeed post this question awhile back. It's great that leggings are making a come-back as they look good, are comfy and travel well.
Take care,
Jan
This is a fun website that shows what the ladies are wearing in Paris, as well as other interesting tidbits and photos:

For Germany this winter - The legging style is combined with a short dress or skirt, especially sweater type dresses or those odd bubble dresses, not just by themselves. Thin, skinny jeans are still very hot here. Boots, boots, and more boots of all kinds are everywhere, as well as colored converse shoes.
I second what Jo says, it's the same in Italy, along with long sweaters to wear with the leggings and skinny jeans. And you cannot go wrong with boots!
Thanks D.D...Purple/plum seems to be the "in" color!
I, personally, have quit wearing leggings anywhere since it tends to make people point and giggle. But thanks for he update.
That's okay Ed, but keep the tutus. AND boots!
All I see if colored, textured tights with boots of varying hights. with knee high sweater dresses, mostly short sleeve wit tight long sleeves underneath and dressy scarves. THe boots have been mostly flats.
BTW: I am currently vacationing in Spain - Madrid, Segovia and Toledo - same fashion everywhere.
Cheers,
Jennifer from Boston,MA
Wearing leggings under dresses seems to be very big here. I really hope wearing leggings on their own does not come back into fashion. Leggings were the in thing when I was in my teens and all I can remember is that we all looked dreadful (all I remember is a sea of enormous bottoms or knobbly knees!)
RE: the Jo and Claire comments..same here in Paris area..black leggings, knee high boots
