I know better than to hide belongings on the beach while swimming and have found many travel sights that say not to but I still haven't found any that list an alternative for those important belongings you have to keep with you. What are some of your solutions and/or has anyone found a good waterproof bag or something to put it in? I am not particularly fond of those lanyard hard sided cases seen at water parks as I have had them open while swimming but any other ideas will be greatly appreciated.
What would you need to take to beach that is valable. I just put everything in hotel safe,, bring a little money for ice cream /sodas,, and thats it.. I have used those hard things ,, and haven't ever had them open on me,, used them while snorkling in Caribbean,, off a cruise ship, so had to have cruise id card with me.
I agree with pat. As far as those hard sided cases (they need a shorter name) go I like the ones where the top screws on, the whole things looks like a tiny Thermos, as these feel more secure than the clip-top ones.
I am actually planning on a trip backpacking through Europe over the summer and am looking for something to put my passport and such in. I am just terrified of something like that opening with things that important in it.
Easy, just don't take your passport to the beach. Even if you stay in a hostel, it's about 1,000x safer there than on the beach. Seriously, the general rule for beaches anywhere is don't take anything that you can't easily replace or keep on your person at all times. Unless you plan on acting suspicious or committing a crime while on the sand, I seriously doubt that anyone will ask to see your passport.
I have no personal experience with this but you could look at the:
Splash Caddy.
There's also a Splash Caddy Junior.
But I agree with the others, it's best to keep your valuables locked up somewhere else.
They are also called beach safes.
Melissa,
I have a waterproof waist belt that I use for valuables. It has worked well, particularly when I stayed at places that did not have a safe in the room (e.g. youth hostels). I've had mine for years and cannot remember where I bought it. It is large enough to hold a passport, key, and some money. I always put things in a small ziploc bag and then put the ziploc in the pack. Do a search on waterproof waist belt and look for one that is submersible (it should show the number of feet that you can take it under water). The waist belt works much better than those things you wear around you neck on a lanyard that can easily float away.
Melissa just put stuff in safe at hostel or hotel . Or use the splash cases,, they haven't ever gotten my stuff wet,, you can try it at home first. BTW,, most stuff that gets wet is still fine, money etc.. the only thing might be the PP,, but as I said , leave at hotel( LOCKED UP) .
Anybody here have any experience with those "Splash Caddies"? In about a month I'll be off on a scuba diving vacation (not to Europe) and although it's usually not an issue while actually diving (I'm skeptical that these little things would stand up under pressure at 100') there are times when I'd like to secure a couple items on the beach (i.e. on me) while swimming/snorkeling. I've used ziplocks and other gizmos with varying degrees of success.
It's best not to bring anything valuable.
If you must bring something, don't leave it alone. Either take shifts to watch your stuff or use a double zip lock bag to keep it dry in the water.

Check out Trip Advisor for all the stories about money being stolen from hotel room safes! When we leave our room, all valuables are transfered to our money belts. Don't be naive and think that all hotel employees are honest. Why chance it and ruin your vacation? Just think about it!
