Kayak & Kiwi didn't send receipts

So Rick Steves recommends Kayak for booking a trip to Greece & Venice. I went to Kayak and found incredibly low prices on flights. So I booked individual flights. USA to Greece, Greece to Venice, Venice back home. Booking the international flights took me to Kiwi.com. They sent back a confirmation, but did not include a price. At the time (Friday), I didn't notice. Today when trying to compile all the itineraries into one place, I can't find any of those prices listed as a receipt. They show up on the credit card, though.

I'm exasperated because I can't find the prices in my browser history, those pages are now gone. They did not come with the confirmation email. Going to Kayak or Kiwi's website, they make me sign in and that's how I've spent my afternoon, re-entering passwords etc. only to be told they don't have a record. *&@#$%!!

Kayak has already failed to help me with trying to book an Athens to Venice leg on a stupid airline's website, so they won't help with this either. My question is: Has anyone else had this problem? Should I worry? (No wonder their prices are so good!) I'm too old for this. :)

Buying Tickets

While it's possible to book your flights on most search sites (they certainly hope you will, to garner their commission), I use these sites only as a first step. Once I've zeroed in on which airline has the best deal for my trip, I check the airline's own site to compare fares. You can often avoid added costs by booking direct (the commissions are charged either as higher prices or in the form of fees for booking through a third party). And airlines may offer bonuses (such as extra frequent-flier miles) to those who book direct.

Search sites occasionally beat the fares on the airline's official site, sometimes by using "mix and match" journeys to connect the legs of a single trip on multiple airlines. (However, these trips can be difficult to rebook in case of a delay or missed leg — review the schedule carefully, watching out for very tight connections or extremely long layovers.)

For maximum peace of mind, it's usually best to book directly with the airline, which can more easily address unexpected problems or deal with rescheduled flights. If you do buy tickets through a third-party site, make sure you carry their phone number with you — you'll need to speak to a person if you have a problem.

Actually RS suggest Kayak, et al, as a research tool and buying from the airline; this advice is repeatedly given here.

Sorry about your situation. Can the airline answer your question(s)?

Your credit card company should be able to give you a breakdown of the charges.

They sent back a confirmation

Does it have a booking number or record locator on it? (if not, what does it have on it?) You should be able to go online and manage your booking and obtain a receipt if you have some kind of unique identifier. Also, did you check your spam folder for any e-mails you may have missed?

Also, are you saying that you did not see the price before you booked? Was the one shown on your credit card different than the price you agreed to?

Is the price correct on your credit card? If so, and you have the booking confirmation, what is the issue? Is the charge on your credit card different than you expected?

Kayak always pushes you out to a sight to book, so that's no surprise.

Also I think it's law that you can cancel anything within 24 hours (at least for domestic flights, not sure about international).

"Kayak always pushes you out to a sight to book"

They used to, but now you can often book on Kayak itself (as said above, not recommended, but it is now possible).

This is a USDoT regulation, but one key aspect is that it covers a booking directly with the airline, not through a third party.

Yes you should be worried.

Kiwi is one of the worst agencies out there. Your "incredibly low prices" are going to come with some problems.

  1. You may not get the flights you think you got. (Is the charge on your card or is it a hold?)
  2. You are probably going to be on a number of unrelated airlines. So you will be on your own when a flight is delayed or changed and one of your connections is no longer viable. I hope you aren't checking luggage.

Good Luck!

Thank you very much everyone! We were going by the RS book for Greece, which I don’t think said we should not book with kayak but go direct to the airline. Anyway, we are fairly confident that the price on the credit card is the same as what we agreed on. We have booking and confirmation numbers, just not a receipt for the dollar amount. I don’t know why they would omit this information, but trying to reach anyone has been problematic. I tried to read all the info very carefully, but there are several different airlines involved plus kayak and kiwi. It can get confusing! To say the least.

At least we are committed to bringing only carry-on luggage, and all of our layovers are about two hours. So I hope luck is with us. Thanks again for the help and advice.

Good Luck. I’ll cross my fingers. 2 hours isn’t that long on unprotected connections
