We will be going to Rome and the Amalfi coast in mid-September. I've heard Rome is a dusty gritty city and lighter colors will take a beating. True or not?
Hi, Have been to Rome. Didn't notice my clothes becoming dusty and gritty.
I don't think it's specific to just Rome, but in general light colored clothing will show dirt more than darker clothing (the dark clothes will be just as dirty, of course, but just won't show it as much). When I travel, I prefer to wear darker pants so when I sit on a bench or something they won't show every speck of dirt. I usually go with black, navy, brown, or very dark khaki. But I'm sure others have successfully worn lighter clothing in Rome.
Edit: I should add that if I'm wearing dark bottoms, I pair them with a light colored top, especially in summer. I don't want to look like I'm going to a funeral.
I wore a combination of lights and darks in Rome and none of my clothes were the worse for wear. Rome isn't very different from any other big city as far as grime goes. It's more important to pay attention to the weather and plan accordingly. If it will be hot there in September, you don't want to be stuck only with pants and dark clothes.
Rome is not dusty. Pompeii may be but not Rome. Don't know where you would have heard that. It is about the same as an large metro area here or there. We tend to wear darker, not black, and olive kahkis that seem to wear well.
I almost always wear dark bottoms( skirts, pants or capris) ,, black usually, simply because dirt doesn't show as much, ( as noted, sitting on benches or old walls in white pants is a no no,, ) and I pack light. I like black and wear it at home all the time ,, and I don't think I look like I am going to a funeral,, LOL .. I think navy, brown or dark grey are all good base colors too.
I tried to avoid wearing my usual black in Rome and elsewhere in Europe this summer. I can't say my clothes got any dirtier than at home.
I couldn't help but notice, though, that the local women with the most style wore black, with maybe a colorful scarf and accessories. I'd say wear whatever you want.
My personal experience is that everything shows up on black clothing - esp. pants, if you sit on anything that isn't extremely clean, or walking 'off-road'. Shirts that are dark-colored will usually hide dribbles a little better that black (depends on the fabric, etc.) - because black is so dark, anything not black shows up. My browns, dark rusts, dark greens are much more forgiving. Something about the play of light as opposed to the way black absorbs thelight and your 'dribble' stands out more...
My khaki pants always give me a margin for error - there's a reason khaki has been used for uniforms forever! And it's a heck of a lot cooler than black.
While on vacation, I'm extremely envious of anyone I see wearing white - it just ain't gonna happen, but it just looks so cool and crisp :-(
So, it depends on your fabrics more than the actual color, I think. And bring a bib for the gelato!!!
I traveled in Rome for three days during July. I had no problem with the colors of my clothing, but the streets of Rome were a little dirty, thus my feet were very dusty. I wear sandals during summer, so my feet were dirty fast in a dusty street!
