Itinerary/Train Travel Help - Colmar to Salzburg?

Hello, my parents and I will be visiting Europe 11/29-12/13/17 to enjoy the Christmas markets primarily. It's been several years since I've travelled to multiple countries in the same trip and this time I'll have my parents with me as well, so I want to make sure I have things planned really well. We're flying into Paris and then our first stop is Colmar/Strasbourg for 4 nights/3 days, then Salzburg for 3 nights/2 days, then Vienna for 3 nights/ 2 days and finally Prague for 3 nights/2 days. We'll fly out of Prague to go home.

I initially thought we'd only spend 2 nights/ 1 day in Colmar and then head to Nuremberg for 2 nights/1 day before heading to Salzburg. I knew it would be quick, but I thought it would be fun. Now I'm thinking that we'll leave out Nuremberg and spend more time in the Colmar and Strasbourg and head straight to Salzburg. The train ride looks to be 7+ hours though and 2 transfers. My parents are okay with that, but I'm just not sure. I would really appreciate any suggestions or tips in navigating a long train trip like that. Maybe we just spend 3 nights/2 days in Colmar and stop in a city en route to break up the trip a bit? The rest of the trip is pretty well set, so this is the part that I need to nail down better. Thanks in advance for your thoughts and feedback!

If you do it from Strasbourg, there are some single connection itineraries. On Saturday Dec 2, there is one at 9:09 with a 44 minute cross-platform change in Stuttgart, and at 13:55 with a 19 minute cross platform change in Karlsruhe. The train in Karlsruhe is originating there, so you just cross the platform and get on as should be waiting.

Consider an overnight in Stuttgart to see the medieval market in Esslingen. Another possibility is Munich which has some interesting markets too, though nothing like Esslingen.

Thanks, Chani. I really appreciate the suggestion, and I will look into that. We've never been there, so it would be nice see that even if just briefly and break up the long train trip to Salzburg.
