I am a 53 year old woman traveling to Europe for the first time next month. I am landing in Paris and staying with friends for 4-5 days and then I am considering heading out to Rothenburg and then Salzburg...Since I am traveling during a slow season should I make hotel reservations or wing it at the RS recommended places or by checking in the at the local TI centers. I have to be in Dornach, Switzerland on the 23rd for a week long conference.
Itinerary suggestions?..and should I buy a Flex Pass and is RS the cheapest place to purchase...Thanks everyone!
Betsy,
I used a flexi pass in Switzerland last October and I found it to be the best value for me. It also covers some museums and steamers. I bought a four day pass for one week, but we only needed a three day pass. I bought it from Rick Steves's website and it was the best value that I have seen.
It's pretty darn cold there in March so dress in layers and take a hat and gloves. As a result of the weather you should be fine winging it hotel wise (make sure you can handle your bags alone...well you know the RS motto). In March I'd take a cab from the train station to my hotel where ever it was located unless it was within a block or two of the train station. You can save using the Flexi Pass as you're staying in one place for several times. You could also go with point to point tickets but as this is your first time a pass is less hassle. RS is a good purchase point.
Betsy, I think this time of year you will be safe traveling without reservations, whether you call ahead the morning of or use a TI for a referral. It sounds as though there is no downside to making advanced reservations for Paris and Dornoch, which would save you a spot of bother over there.
