Itinerary Suggestions-Portugal, Spain, Nice

Hi.

We had such a wonderful trip to East Central Europe last summer, with the help of your fabulous suggestions, that we are already planning another European vacation.

Right now I'm looking for itinerary ideas. Our starting and ending cities are fixed, as we jumped on a seat sale and got a pretty good deal, we think. (Less than what we paid last year, which was also pretty good.) We are flying open jaw into Lisbon, Portugal and out of Nice, France in May. We know we also wish to see Madrid and Barcelona.

Our trip is 22 days (including travel days) and 20 nights. So, we are thinking 5 nights in each city, at this point, but I am wondering if we might want to distribute our time a little differently. We thought we'd fly between Lisbon and Madrid and between Barcelona and Nice, but take the train within Spain.

For side trips, we were thinking of Sintra, Toledo, Montserrat, Cannes, and Monaco.

We like architecture, art, museums, history, culture, churches, ruins, castles, natural beauty, and food. We are not interested in hiking, sports, etc. We are not going for beaches (it's May, after all), but would not be averse to a nice break on a beach on a warm day, either.

We love to walk around and explore, and we've loved every place we've been, so we aren't very fussy or jaded, but we do want to make the most of our time. Jet lag doesn't usually slow us down much, either, so we can plan to do a fair bit on our first day.

I welcome input and suggestions on our very preliminary itinerary. Thanks in advance!

Hi BB. I think you are missing out by skipping most of the south of France, particularly the Rhone Valley area.

I'd take time from all the other main cities to spend time there. Even to the point of skipping Nice, though you could still finish there if it calls to you.

Thanks for the input.

Our flight home leaves from Nice, so skipping it altogether is not an option. I'm not sure if trying to see other parts of France would be too much for this trip.

Portugal and Spain are our main focus. I would love to see other parts of France (we have been to Paris and Versailles), also, but will probably leave that for another time. So much to see!

Evora is an easy bus ride from Lisbon, and has many features on your list of interests.

bb,

from what i understand, there are suppose to be a lot of ruins in Nice.

i would be tempted to head into Morocco for a day or so.

Hi BB!

Here are two architectural ideas for Barcelona. I have seen the first one, & understand the second is "in the same neighborhood."

The La Sagrada Familia Cathedral has been under construction for over 100 years. Gaudi was the architect.

The older part of Hospital Sant Pau was built by Lluís Domènech i Muntanter, who was Gaudi's teacher. Both men are considered Modernist Architects. The hospital is a working hospital.

Reviews for the hospital on this forum can be seen here.

I hope this is of some help.

Sounds like fun! Lisbon and Barcelona definitely have their best features outdoors, so going in May is a wise idea. Pack a few umbrellas. I'm sure you're also aware meal times and entertainment are much later in Portugal and Spain than here, so you should plan on staying up late.
I highly recommend at least one night in the Bairro Alto of Lisbon. It is a collection of little bars, usually they can fit no more than 15-20 people, but you are encouraged to stand outside in the street and converse with others. It's really unlike a lot of nightlife spots in Europe. The La Latina area of Madrid is similar, a bit more formal, but by far the best food.
Of course, the Prado and La Reina Sofia are not to be missed. I also highly recommend a side trip to El Escorial and El Valle de Los Caidos. Both can easily be done in an afternoon away from Madrid.
I took a cooking class in Barcelona and had a FABULOUS time. Even though I won't be making paella at home anytime soon, the teacher gave me some excellent tips on how to improve my cooking skills.
I've never been to Nice, but I'd be happy to answer any questions about Lisbon, Barcelona, and Madrid you might have.

Thanks for the great suggestions, everyone. I wish the trip could be longer. (Don't we always?)

Hi,
We were based in Nice the week of Christmas (2014) and had a wonderful time. Of course, there was a lot of Christmas activity which won't be happening in May, but weather will be warmer and you will enjoy walking the Promenade by the sea. We enjoyed walking through Old Town, Cours Saleya market and the great view over Nice from Castle Hill. The amount of daylight was limited so we only ventured to one city each day. We took the bus to Monaco/Monte Carlo for 1.5 euro each way. Gorgeous ride along the coast. We like Monaco. We went into the Cathedral to see where Princess Grace and Prince Ranier rest. We liked walking around the garden and then walking over to Monte Carlo to see the Casino. Of course, there was a Christmas Market and decorations in the city so it made the visit more festive. Christmas Day we took the bus to the Rothschild Villa in Cap Ferrat. Not to be missed, in our opinion. I wish we had had time to walk about the town, but we spent the whole day at the Villa as we also had a wonderful lunch in their cafe. Go to Youtube to see Rick Steves videos of Nice and the surrounding area. He features the Villa. A third day was spent in Antibes. We took the train. It was about 30 minutes away. We had fun walking around the Port with all the yachts. We did go to the Picasso Museum and had a nice walk around the city. Antibes was the least favorite trip to the 5 of us (adults 25 - 60), but everyone has differing views about what they enjoy. On our way to Monaco one day and to the Villa the next, we passed by Ville Franche and I would very much have liked to have stopped there. It looked beautiful. Rick also has footage of that online.
I know you'll have a great time in the South of France!

For the France part of your trip, get Rick Steves Provence And The French Riviera. It has much more detail on this area than his general France book does. Reading through it, you can see if you are more drawn to the area around Nice (which is easy to see without a car) or the Rhone Valley (Arles, Avignon, Nimes, etc), some of which is easy without a car and some of which isn't.

If you do decide you want to focus on the Rhone Valley, you can fly from Barcelona to Marseille instead of Nice, and just take a train to Nice the day before your flight back home.

A couple of suggestions for Lisbon, particularly if it's rainy: the Oceanario, largest aquarium in Europe; the Museu Gulbenkian (don't miss the Lalique Room!). Also, try to hear some fado singing.

Thanks for the lovely tips and ideas.

I've downloaded the Rick Steves ebooks for all those areas. That way, I can bring them with me, too, and still travel light.

We've settled on 5 nights in Lisbon at the beginning of our trip and 5 nights in Nice at the end (with at least one day trip to someplace nearby). (Will save other regions of France for another time.)

We are now trying to decide on our 10 days in Spain. 5 in Madrid (and area) and 5 in Barcelona (and area)? If we do that, there's a holiday while we're in Madrid (San Isidro's Feast Day; it's specific to Madrid, I gather). Do we want to be in Madrid for that or get out of Dodge? Maybe we'll do 4 in Madrid and 6 in Barcelona? Decisions. Decisions.
