Itinerary Planning - Central Europe

Hi -

I am in the very beginning stages of planning a trip to Central Europe for either next spring (late) or fall (early). I will have between 16 and 17 nights and will be flying open jaw. I know that I want to see Prague, Cesky Krumlov (as either a day trip but more likely an overnight), Krakow (day trip to Auschwitz-Birkenau) and Budapest. I am thinking of adding Warsaw and Vienna with a possible overnight in Bratislava. I have already decided to leave Germany, Switzerland and the rest of Austria for another trip.

Does this seem reasonable? Any off the beaten path places or sites that you would suggest?

Thanks in advance.

All of your destinations have good connections by train or plane with the exception of Krakow. If you can fly to Krakow without too many plane changes that would be good. From there is good train connection to Warsaw. Warsaw has direct flights to Prague or Budapest. If you fly to Prague then would be Cesky Krumlov, Vienna, Budapest or if you fly to Budapest then Vienna, Cesky Krumlov, Prague. With 16 to 17 days I would not be adding more destinations.

Or fly into Warsaw, then train from Krakow to Prague (rome2rio.com shows a route with one train change that takes 6.5 hours), then train Prague-CK-Vienna-Budapest. Bratislava can easily be a day trip from Vienna.

3 Warsaw, 3 Krakow, 3 Prague, 1 CK, 3 Vienna/Bratislava, 3 Budapest = 16.

That's a lot to cram into 16 nights. Consider that you use 1/2 day or more for each transfer, that gives you 2 days sightseeing in Warsaw (jetlag?), Prague and Budapest (not much) and 1 day each for Krakow, Auschwitz, Vienna, Bratislava and CK.

That's a nice wish list you have there Jennifer. The biggest hurdle for you will be accessing Krakow and Cesky Krumlov, which will eat in to your time. Warsaw may be a necessary addition as an entry point because of flights. There is a fast train from Warsaw to Krakow. Alternatively you could shuttle to Kraków with flights from Vienna. Buses are your best option for Prague >> Cesky Krumlov >> Vienna.

Warsaw (2)
Krakow (3)
Prague (3)
Cesky Krumlov (1)
Vienna (3)
Budapest (4)

We just spent 2 1/2 weeks in Budapest, Prague, and the Wachau Valley in Austria. We didn't go to Vienna because we had been there previously, but it is a wonderful city. We flew to Budapest for 5 days, then took a bus to the Vienna Airport to pick up a rental car for the week in Austria, 5 days of which we spent in Linz doing day trips. While in Linz we took an excursion to Cesky Krumlov because it actually is much closer to Linz than it is to Prague, and was a very easy day trip. After our week in Austria, we returned the car to the Vienna Airport, spent the night near the bus station, and then took a bus the next day to Prague, where we spent 4 days before flying home from there. I know most people talk about taking the train between major cities in Europe, but we decided to try to bus route, and it was quite wonderful. The buses were great! We are seniors so carting our luggage on and off the trains can be a little problematic at times. With the bus, the driver loads it in the luggage compartment, you climb up to your comfortable seats, and off you go (and they have restrooms on board.) Also it is very reasonable when compared with the trains, and the travel time is comparable. While we were in Budapest, we also took the time for an excursion to Esztergom, and in Prague we took the train to Kutna Hora. So we did get a chance to see some of both countries, even though this wasn't the kind of ambling driving trips we usually do in Europe. Good luck!
